It is now required by Federal Law, moving won't get you away from the requirement.

As I said, they are complying with a federal law. Move to a state that is in compliance, you will have to do the same thing. Move to a state that isn't in compliance, you'll have to do it when they move into compliance. Plenty of other reasons not to like California, but this isn't one.

I'm in CA as well and just renewed mine. Only need to take a pic and pay unless you got a ticket in the last 5 years. Then you would have to take a test

Well I just applied online for my license , answered some questions and paid $43. It said I should receive my licenses in 2 to3 weeks.
No new picture or any tests I guess. Thanks for all the replies and Info.

Same scenario, I have NOT taken a written test upon renewal since I don't know when. If I ever have to take a written test(hazmat exception), I would probably fail. The last test I took was when we had Class 1, and you didn't need to take a hazmat test.

I had to show a secondary ID with my physical address last time I renewed CDL & Hazmat in my state.

It's taken you 50 years to decide it's time to move from California? Shoot, it only took me about 30 years to make the decision, then another 5 to actually do it! I guess some of us just aren't real fast learners...

The bureaucracy here in Utah is at least as bad, if not worse than California ever was! I do believe that some of your more populated areas aren't quite as bad as they used to be, but that isn't saying much.
