We did pretty good until the emphasis went to JIT and using the trailers as rolling warehouses. We had a sweet deal for a long time with Lucky Stores but they quit buying from our major seafood customer and Safeway took the account.
We paid our drivers by the hour so too much sitting time hurt us. Not being able to get out in time to catch the back haul and having to dead head back up north absolutely killed us.
I asked for a meeting with Safeway and never got one. The guy that bought our trailers took over the haul and added more trailers so he could drop and hook. That didn't work either. And when Safeway lost track of a trailer full of iced shrimp that sat in their yard for five days and tried to blame the carrier he got out of it too.

These stories remind me just say no to grocery warehouses.

I've heard horror stories about Shop Rite/wakefern, but the one time I delivered there I got lucky I guess. In and out in under 2 hours....... shockingly

I have no clue but a large ag company has to be investigating the possibility especially since it’s not going to hurt the french fry business.

That's what I was thinking. They already have the land, the equipment, and the marketing expertise.
The little Mom and Pop growers over here in the Emerald Triangle are getting out of it.
LOL...Ever since they legalized it and the growers have to pay fees and taxes and get permits like any other farmer all the profit went out of it for them. Welcome to agriculture.
There are a couple of big agricultural interests in California, Newhall Land and JG Boswell, that are getting into pot. Same as Simplot, they have the tools to make it work.

Do they look for professional drivers with pot experience, now?

I don't know. I stay as far away as I can from all of that. There are some things that the less I know about the better off I'll be. Illegal pot farming is one of them.
