i found that if you key both cams at 6 degrees that it runs better, instead of setting it to 4, and 6. With injection timing set at 4 degrees, its injecting fuel roughly at 17.5 degrees BTDC, which is for emission purposes, because peak injection timing would be around 23 degrees BTDC, using a 6 degree wedge you would get it closer to 19 degrees BTDC. Ive set timing like this on engines ive overhauled as well as adjusted timing on engines with higher mileage, ive only had positive feedback. some noticed better mileage, some noticed better torque response. mechanically ive noticed the difference in the oil looking healthier in between services
Retarded injection timing gives you more particulate matter, less NOX emissions, unburnt fuel, shorter oil life from hydrocarbon saturation, cooler combustion
Advanced injection timing gives you hotter combustion, higher NOX emissions, less particulate matter, less unburnt fuel, overall healthier engine. Better response.Heavyd Thanks this. -
Hello and thank you for the info that also confirms my answer from searching.
Right now i have 2 concerns, first is the fuel consumption (from which i maybe get the engine lights shaking) and second is excessive black smoke.
first: i am getting is 3.5-4 mi/gal. mechanic said that we will change the angle to 5 as soon as getting home next week. We don't know what angle i had it before; all i know is that and i was getthing 7.3 - 7.6 mi/gal @ 67mi/h . Adjustments was done in software by Dr diesel in Effingham, and it run good.
By running the diagnostic tool last week, i had to change: exhaust pressure sensor, air differential sensor, fuel and metering actuator on cyl 4-5-6.
Now engine starts hard, i have to crank longer. i see thiny air bubbles in the clear glass fuel filter.
I inspected the fuel hoses, nothing is leaking.
I am thinking of buying the Injector Leak Test Kit, Part Number 3164001, and check for leaks.
Should we touch the injectors, and reinspect all the o-rings?
For the smoke, i don't know if this is related to high fuel consumption, due to lost of unburned fuel.
Thank you in advance for your help

i did, and i had it already when i asked the q.
answer is below by a cummins guru.

If your seeing bubbles in the sight glass, then you have a leak in the fuel system. Check your fittings and check your fuel filter. From what you said here, you have an isx hpi-tp engine, I'm believe a cm2150. Check everything on the suction side of the system and verify your lift pump is working.

He has to have an 871 or older if he has fuelling solenoids...

we will check the quick connection tomorrow, and the fuel pump pressure as well.

Any one out there knows how set timing on isx 450 ho.timing code 06
-
there is only engine base timing and gear backlash that can be set if your timing code is 06, meaning you have a common rail fuel system isx, fuel timing is all done by the ecm, so to set the engine base timing you need a crankshaft lock pin, and a 6 degree timing wedge, as far as the special tools go.Tug Toy Thanks this.

I understand how to set timing, retard and advance same on a gasoline engine dating to about 1970-1971 depending on which of my old cars Im trying to work with.
I don't understand how a Diesel engine would need timing because diesel is running off it's own compression right? Once you light it shes gonna run and run and run for as long you have fuel to it.
