I suppose it depends on how much dirt is on the strap. It would reduce friction quite a bit wouldn't it?
Many things could affect the coefficient of friction, oil, temperature, tightness and yes dirt. But back to our original topic of “half strapping” if you fold the strap and stick it into one slot then roll the winch the piece out the bottom is going to going to come down around the back and under the part going up gripping it tight. You make another revolution and it’s not going anywhere.
It will slip. If you fold the strap and push it through both holes it won't slip. Why do drivers get tickets for it? Why does DOT bend down and look through the winch to check that the strap is actually going through he winch... They do in Colorado. Maybe because not putting it completely though is a bad idea.
I’ve never known anyone to get a ticket and I’m not sure what the violation is. I will say just because a cop or lawmaker thinks it’s wrong doesn’t mean physics don’t apply.
Would running off the road in the swampy tundra, where the truck comes to a dead stop in less than 50 feet, and pipe doesn't slip count as a hard brake. lol. Luckily I haven't but it happens all the time with people that use the same method. This sounds like a truckstop coffee counter myth to me, and I am calling that unless some one can show me a written law stating it is illegal. I have never ever had, heard of or seen a dot look inside of a winch period, I have had them look to see if the manufacturers rating tag was on them, but that is on the other end. I have had them get nit picky enough to write me up for an 1/8 in nick in one, but never ever any mention of and short or half strapping.
3 bar winch. Fold your strap in half, shove it all the way through. Worth there weight in gold when you got frozen fingers!
That is the ones I like the best, especially up here in the frozen north, but I pull a lot of different trailers, so have to work with what is there.
