I’m shut down for the weekend do to oversize restrictions. So I put your theory to the test. I have a strap over the loose part of my half assed trap job of an empty crate. It’s short strapped and what I consider tight and haven’t touched it in 2000 miles.

I got my long bar out of the headache rack, which I almost never use because a short bar gets straps tight enough.

I was able to get 4 more clicks out of the winch and could not get anymore with a 4’ bar and almost 300 pounds on the end of it. Here are the after pictures. Strap never slipped.

The only way you can get one to slip is if you did not leave enough slack in it when you fold it. It is not brain surgery and anyone can easily see it is as safe as the other method.
Like someone else mentioned earlier, they will slip when they are all the way through when they are to short to get a wrap on them. I have pulled, tugged and fought the hell out of a strap when it was too short to get enough slack to get a wrap on it several times over the years.

    kylefitzy Thanks this.

Here’s how I handle the tail on a ratchet strap, I tie this knot and throw it behind the strap. It’s quick and simple.

Well, thanks for giving a try. :)

I don't know what to tell you as to why it didn't slip out. They do for me, 2 wraps, 3 wraps around the winch doesn't seem to mater. I'm not a big guy either.

I am testing the folded bight tuck method today on my slide stopper. I cranked the hell out of it with no pullout so far. And i kinda dont care about tickets anymore. I follow all the rules and get them anyway so to hell with the man. Catch me.

6 months i been haulin this exact same brick once or twice a week. Have tried every possible setup i could think of, with a stopwatch on each time. This is the one. Fastest, and for everyone around me, i think its the safest. The loader said hes never seen anyone screen all 4 sides ever. it is admittedly overkill. I will start carrying my plastic edge protectors again. Took them off the truck when i quit and cleared out. never used on rock.

So, how do we determine what determines that a 4' strap "is secured in a manner that prevents it from becoming loose, unfastening, opening or releasing while the vehicle is in transit."?

What does the winch manufacturer say about their winches...
Lets take a look at Kinedynes warnings...

What is that they mention right before the CAUTION?
Why would they say something like that? I was mistaken thinking it was only 6". Granted they are going to be including a large margin for error sosomeone doesn't come along and sue them, right?

Could it slip on the spool? It's possible I guess. But I've never had it happen in my 20+ years...

That guy that doesn't throw straps on shingles in his Conestoga says the same thing.

The guys in Ohio that Run three straps on a load of slinkys also.

    . Hold on feller.
My ship is battened down and ready for any storm in it's path. All day every day.
You can't figure out how to use a winch that's your problem.
Mine will rip the strap in half or rip the winch off the trailer before it "slips"!

booley, cke, Lepton1 and 4 others Thank this.

    That's what I'm saying.
It isn't just my problem, it's the problem of people around me that don't have a choice. It's my responsibility to make sure it doesn't become thier problem.
