Ya I couldn't imagine trying to sleep with something on my face. It's like those people who sleep with ear plugs. I don't like losing one of my senses.

It's about melatonin, when there is a lot of light around you, you don't produce as much, and don't get good sleep. It is also good to put a sheet over yourself, as that helps block the light.
You can get used to it.

I had a good cure for the drowsy problem. I tuned the XM radio to the comedy channels.... you can't sleep if your laughing your hind end off.

What works for me is keeping my mind engaged in some way, and the most effective means I've found to that end are podcasts that I think are fascinating. My personal preference is for This American Life and Radiolab podcasts, both non-news public radio programs, and they work for me because they're always interesting in ways that engage my brain. Music and caffeine don't always keep me awake enough to drive safely, but listening to something I think is profoundly interesting always does. It's the same thing as talking to someone on the phone or the CB because your brain is involved in the conversation; just keeping between the lines while rolling down the interstate doesn't really require any complex thinking.

Good health and proper nutrition make a huge difference in your body's ability to maintain alertness--take care of your body and it will take care of you when you need it to.
