    Use your best judgement. You can be a couple inches over height or a few inches wider than your permit. I personally would rather buy extra over width permits (if it doesn't cause me to need a pilot car). Or split the difference and hammer down.

    Was about to post the exact same thing.......14' high is legal in most states for example. Thats a gem of which I will have to remember

    OP, I go by the tread on the tire myself. If the tread is on the trailer, but the sidewall bulge is over a little, normally I wont stress it. Pulling an RGN though, if that is the case my binders/chain hooks normally stick out further so it is less noticeable for me. Going inside the rub rail though is a different matter.
    I certainly wouldn't go too far over as permits are pretty cheap, especially when comparing them to fines etc. And no, if you get busted, I wont be paying your ticket, so buyer beware!

    the Mississippi that do not touch the river have a height limit of 14'
