Throwing iron is not so bad. I do most of my driving in the woods so hanging jewelry just comes with the job once you get on to it it only takes a few minutes. I run triples just fold them, put them over the outside wheel then flip the inner wheel part over, hook the back, hook the front pull ahead a foot than hook the middle. The pin puller trick I saw works great after you spin out and can't move.

Let me make something clear about driving with chains. If the pass was solid ice, it would be closed. They would never let you try it if it was that unsafe. There is a difference between ice and heavy packed snow. You can chain up and drive safely on packed snow but on ice, it would be a disaster. The driving is done no faster than 30mph. It's no big deal and nothing to be afraid of. I've seen drivers try to take the pass without chains due to being unsure of how to chain up and they had to be towed and pay hefty fines. Cables are ok but they tend to break easier. I recommend cables if you just want to park and satisfy the DOT. However, cables are no longer acceptible by some states like CO.

If it is drivable on the other side of the pass, I will chain up to get over the pass. It's that or stay parked and hear the same old boring truck stories. In 30 yrs of trucking I've heard it all.

Do up the center first, then the inside followed by the outside.

I always carried a set of LONG chain pliers and parts to fix them if needed.

P.S. I drive the Yukon (Faro - Whitehorse) during the winter of 1969/70.

I've just simply never found this to be true.

I've had to stop because visibility or wind before I even had the chance to put chains on, but never had I put chains on then found it was too bad to be driving.

Get them tight, put on a nice long CD and have at it.

If you are white knuckling the steering wheel then you are driving to fast, chains or not.
