285 or 295 absolutely is a real measurement. Its the width of the tire in millimeters. The next number is a ratio off the height to width.

I don't even know how to respond to the 'i have 295/75 11r22.5' posts. My first thought was... actually i better keep that to myself.

But it's not tread width it's section width.

you are correct that it does not physically change the gear ratio but it does change the overall ratio of engine rpm/distance traveled. witch is essentially the same as a small gear ratio change or changing the effective overall ratio.

I agree with the first sentence but not the second. The ratio remains the same you just go farther in 1 revolution of the larger tire. Nothing else changes.

I would tend to Agree.Look at most new cars even (small cars) they're running 16 or 17 inch or 18 inch tires.Thinking for Fuel Mileage?

if the tire travels further for one revolution and nothing else changes the overall ratio of engine rpm to forward movement has still changed

one revolution of the drive shaft = further distance traveled with a larger circumference tire. therefor changing your effective overall ratio. even though the gear ratio remains constant

    daf105paccar and spyder7723 Thank this.

that's the rim diameter not the tire diameter.

I would agree with this except effective ratio and overall ratio are 2 different things and putting the 2 words in the same sentence confuses people.
