Is asphalt different in TX? Don't come back with the heat issue because 95* is 95* regardless of the state its measured in. And I know it's not a weight issue, since almost every load I haul is over 80k net on 5 or 6 axles. If you had bad luck with caps it's probably the shop that did them or the casings were junk to begin with. The recap shop we use has a high rejection rate. 9 out of 10 tires we send in were taken off in perfect condition but will come back capped and have at least one repair (patch) inside because their inspection found something in the casing. Another local shop will cap anything that's black and round, a cheap farmer found out when he took 2 of our rejected casings to them to be capped and when they exploded they took out the rear of his hopper.:biggrin_2559:

Bottom line: Buy good tires, keep them inflated, take them off before they're worn out, have a good shop cap them and you'll be fine.

how would that be possible without any steel cords showing?

can you see how bangdad claims are just a little misleading

um......they x-ray the casings, if they don't like them they reject them. They also won't cap any casing regardless of condition if it's older than 4 yrs. So they sent the rejected ones back to me. The farmer was looking for "cheap" tires to spend his government money on and I was happy to sell them. He then took them to the other tire shop who will cap anything, end of story. What's so misleading? If you don't like caps fine, waste you money however you wish. But no amount of truck driver or internet "facts" will change the fact that we've had EXCELLENT luck with caps. Some casings are on their 2nd cap. So while you have bought virgins and spend ~$900 for 3 changes I have capped the origional tire and only spent $520. ($300 for virgin and $110 for each cap there after)

    $300 x 16 = $4800.00 x 3 changes = $14,400.00 all virgins
    $300 x 16 = $4800.00 + caps ($110.00 each x 2) $3520.00 Virgins capped twice.

So I guess if running all virgins for 3 complete changes is worth the extra $8,320 your spending then great for you. But I'd rather take that money and take a long vacation.:biggrin_2559:

My only problem now is due to a change in what we're hauling we no longer wear tires out fast enough to cap them twice in the 4 year period. And the set of x-ones I just replaced had too much damage due to rocks they couldn't be capped. But you win some you lose some.

They're charging you $300 to cap your casings? Send me your casings and I'll sell them back to you capped for $280.:biggrin_255:

no doubt the xray deal will increase the reliability of caps, pretending i believe your story what if the farmer took the newly recapped rejects and resold them?

you still havnt explained how the tires tore up the back of the hopper with out any steel cords showing?

    What do you mean
He could have rolled them into his house and set them on fire. The point is it's not the cap that is the problem, it's the shop that chooses to cap anything that's black and round that causes the problems. I firmly believe this is what happens to all the guys that buy caps already done and don't have their casings capped. When I buy the tires new I know exactly what their life has been like, this is one reason I have no problems.

Who said the tire that tore up his hopper didn't have cords showing? When the junk casings exploded (you know the casings I said were originally rejected by the shop I use) there were all kinds of cords showing. The cap didn't fail, the REJECTED casing failed.

Your Math is a little off $6820 not $8320 and you would need more tires unless they can cap them all while you are waiting. Be nice to see a truck pull in and a hour later pull out with 16 new caps with smoke coming off them. So therefore when you take two off you will have to have something to replace them or let it sit till you get them back

I have a room full of tires but is it that hard to send your casings in 2 at a time? Buy new steers then send the old ones in to be capped for drives or your trailer, when they return send 2 more. Very seldom do I need more than 2 tires at one time.

Correct, my math was off but so is yours.:biggrin_25525: Point being you can save a lot of money with caps, especially when running multiple trucks/trailers.

Part that makes me laugh is the guys who will buy a Fisher Price plastic aero truck to "save money" all while throwing thousands away in tires.:biggrin_2559:

That Fisher Price plastic truck has better fuel economy numbers than that heavy iron long nose. But hey both have a place in the industry!

    Wonder if I can spec a w9 or 389 with a 240" WB?
