In NC the maximun fee a Notary can charge is $5.00 per signature notarized. Some notaries try to charge $10.00 on a car title because both the seller and purchaser's names are signed, but only the sellers name is the one that has to be notarized, so a $5.00 fee is the maximum fee that can legally be charged. My wife is a Notary and I have read her book and taken the Notary test. I just haven't went to school and done all those things official, but as a dealer I feel I need to know notary law.

In Pa most of the title work is done privately thru notaries that are also tag agents so their fees are a little higher because they are not just notarizing the signatures but also processing sale transfer paperwork on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania so $30 is actually a pretty good deal since the state dmv takes their cut of the transaction.

That's a whole nother can of worms then. So you can't or don't have private notaries that can stamp a title as being legally transferred for a buyer out of state?

We do have private notaries and they will do fine for out of state, however the easiest to access are the ones that have set up the tag agencies but our banks and such also have them on staff. They generally charge about the same as the tag agents just because they can.
