    @Lioness77

    Wow I’m glad to hear a girl completed tmc training. I actually leave to their cdl training next week and wanted to get some insight/tips on successfully graduating because I hear that a lot of people don’t make it.
    What really has me nervous is the tarp lift because even though I’m young 5’8” 160lbs, lifting up to 150lbs just seems pretty difficult, if not impossible for me.

    In the real world we use forklifts to set them where we want them. I don’t what the do in training camp.

    Yeah apparently in training they make you lift up to 150lbs of tarp on to the trailer and people have been sent home for failing.

    That’s crazy. I can see a 50lb four footer. It’s all about leverage. And I hope it’s rolled tight, a floppy big tarp is a booger

    That’s not really fair. In middle school PE girls were allowed to do push-ups with their knees down, no problem, while boys did normal pushups. 150 lbs is a bit too much.

    OK....when I was tested and passed.... You start by crouching with the lumber tarp in front of you. Lift the tarp to your shoulder. Stand up and walk from the rear of the trailer to the drivers side forward to the steel coil on the center of the deck. Put the tarp on the deck. Clime on the deck then get the tarp and slide it to the top of the coil and let it balance on the coil. Slide the tarp off the coil back to the deck and get off the trailer then get the tarp off the deck and return it back to where you started. I don't understand the big issue here. The vast people that failed was because they couldn't add, subtract, or reason. Tarping is just a part of the job.

    It gets easier. I started with Western Express flatbed out of school. At that time I was 5'9" 165 lbs. Western having those 53' trailers meant huge tarps. After doing it repeatedly, you strength will build up and within a couple of months or less, it'll be nothing to lift the tarp up. That said, if you can find a forklift operator to put the tarp on your load, do so. Protect your body as much as possible

    So, I decided after orientation that was not the place for me. They had promised me a female trainer (I have that in an email), and they told me I was going to be going out on the road with a male trainer for 6 weeks after graduation. I talked to the male trainer on the phone and he was already hesitant, telling me that his wife was #####ing him out about it, and he wasn’t comfortable being in the truck with a female either.

    The tarp was not an issue. There is an 80lb and 150lb tarp. Kneel down, make sure it’s wrapped tight, get it up on your shoulder and stand. They were all making bets on me (I didnt know until later), and I picked it right up and put it on the trailer. I was the only female in the class btw.

    Some of the trainers they had there were real ########. One tried to have me dismissed, saying I couldn’t drive. I requested a different trainer to take me out, he had been there for 25 years, and his name was Sam. He said I did great, and told them I would make a great driver.

    Good luck, there are MUCH better companies out there that would appreciate you.

    I bought a new Volvo, and am now an owner operator and pull for Landstar. Best decision I ever made.

    Good luck there, that was May 2018 for me!
