I have thought about that and very well may go that route if I can. My dad used to drive OTR as well but that was more than 20 years ago. Sure he can still give me lots of useful advice even tho times have changed drastically.

Eh a trucks a truck and freight is freight. Ya can't teach common sense. Your pop would be a huge resource. So will your buddy. Read the CDL manual over and over again because learning. Ride with your buddy, like dude posted above. In my opinion (for what it's worth) them CDL mills ain't a gonna do you any favors. It's just about passin the test with them. Lean on your friends n family and grab er by the sack and roll on man you'll be fine.

FWIW, I live in Reno NV & got hired by Roehl for national flatbed right out of CDL school (like, I got my temp CDL on Friday, Roehl had me on a plane to Gary IN that Sunday!) I wanted to go through their CDL school, but they did not provide that for my region. So they told me to go through my own CDL school, and they would reimburse me. I found Roehl's orientation/flatbed training program to be tremendous! The instructors are helpful, and they know their s***.
After 15 months, I left for a smaller flatbed company, COTC, that was offering 2 pennies less per mile, but around 10000 miles per month.
Now, I'm driving intermodal so I can be home daily, if I want.

I have now had my CDL almost 4 years, & I would not change a single step along the way.
    Good luck!

How much money can you make driving intermodal? I will be soon moving to San Diego area and thinking about options to spend more time with my family.

Most companies you drive Intermodal 4 will pay approximately the same, just with a different pay structure. Like my company pays less per mile, but give us a good chunk for bringing cans in and out of the port. We just drop and hook in our yard, and local guys being paid hourly are responsible for taking the cans to the customers. Another competitor in town, pays almost twice as much per mile, but nothing for going into and out of the port. And they have you go directly to customers.

If the port is kind to my drive clock, I can make 5 complete loops in a week, and average $850 take home per week.

Thanks for the info. Do you by a chance know the rates for owner operators?
