eckz,
Although I do not drive a flatbed a lot, we do have one (1), I am usually on tankers. It looks to me that tarping is quite a bit of work. Tarping is fine if you get paid accordingly for it. I hope the company compensates you properly. As for detention, I reiterate that drivers should be paid for all of their time. There is no excuse for a driver to sit for any period of time at a customer and not be paid. Detention (hourly)pay should start the minute you arrive at a customer. Your company is being paid, why not you?
As for running legal, is there any other way? Think about what you are doing. If you run over your hours or do anything illeagal and get caught, who pays for that? You do! If the company is called on the carpet for it, they will deny any involvement and state that the driver knows what the rules are.
Good luck to all of you that want to be an OTR trucker.

I agree 100% with everything stated. So i think your reply was meant for one of the other posters.

Or i should say realized because this thread told me all i needed to know about TMC i just didn't want to see it. i'm going to paste a post i made in another thread about TMC and new driver's (student's, grrrrrrr)
Listen everyone that is here looking for information about different companies. I joined this board alittle over a week ago when i ran a search for TMC. my husband is in trucking school and that is the company he was being pushed toward, they were talking it up like nothing else. i always say if its to good to be true then it is. i posted on the other thread about TMC. i tried to tell myself that all those "bad" post against TMC were just young people who just didn't understand life yet. my husband is 40 and I'm 39. we are starting over when we should be in the safe zone. well it didn't work out that way so with the kids being adults now we decided to do what we were going to do 21 years ago, till a little bundle of joy turned up. ( i got pregnant) so we said we would raise our family first then go on the road. he worked for a factory for 18 years always said he would never step up to management because they get fired to easy. well he took a management job and within 7 months he was fired. so when i went out looking for a company to work for i was trying to use everything I've learned in life. up till 2 days ago i was dismissing everything on here about TMC. BIG MISTAKE! the recruiter came to the school and gave "the to good to be true speech". i became very worried when he laid out check stubs for between $1000 and $1800 a week! again to good to be true. my husband fell for it. he sends in the application but we have a rule if the company doesn't want his wife,me, to ride with him then we mark that company off. the recruiter said that he had to go to ID for 2 weeks for orientation, then on the road with a mentor for 6 weeks, then drive 3 months by himself before i could ride with him. i thought surly it had to be some kind of insurance thing and asked him to call the office as the school had also told him to do. they said maybe i could sign a wavier if it was insurance or whatever?? now the recruiter said that i could go with him to orientation but had to pay $20 a day. i was willing to do that but i was not willing for him to be gone for 6 weeks without seeing his family and then go on the road for 3 more months. so he calls the office. i totally forgot to warn him about the ***** in the office i had read about in the other thread. (FYI. my husband has not one thing against him. I'm serious. if it was possible for someone else to know ever thing you had did in your life that was bad/wrong they would never find anything on him. point being you would think that they would want someone with a squeaky clean record???) any way yesterday he calls the office to ask if I could sign a wavier when he got his truck and not have to wait 3 months, of course i understand the 6 weeks of training. the "women" who he talked with, first said "why would you want your wife with you at orientation?" now so that i don't have to continue repeating ....her tone was mean, like she had no idea what it meant for two people to love each other and not want to be away from each other. just a really bad tone. Very intimidating to say the least. so he tells her just that, we didn't want to be away from each other. so then he goes on to tell her he was already told i could come for orientation and that we understood about the training but the 3 months made no sense to us and was it possible for me to sign a wavier or them just allow me to go. her next response was "why would you want your wife to ride with you?" well now even tho my husband is not the kind to go off on someone, especially to a company who he was moon struck by, he ask her name nicely, then he said " listen *****, just tear up that application. if you are a rep of the company then no way in hell do i want to work for some like that. and hangs up. around this same time i had my phone ringing off the hook from companies i had applied to for him. i spoke with this one company, not sure of the name but i remember her name was Tami. she was not with just one company. she rep. 8 of them. she said 4 were hiring students. now this is when everything starts hitting me, he's going to be considered a student till he climbs that latter again. then she sent me an email as well with a few fact's, one of them was a student will be lucky to make more that $36,000 the first year and even less if your pulling a flat bed. so me and my husband exchanged info, put some things together and i told him to go to his instructor at the school as he is a retired trucker and tell him to cut the #### and lay the truth out for him. Here is a list of facts about first getting into trucking..
*never go with %, no matter what they tell you first year driver's will get the longest empty travels to pick up a load that isn't paying crap. he could have a load 10 miles away worth a huge payday and they give it to someone who has been there longer who might have to drive 300 miles to get it. when they tell you what your % is going to be for the load it could change while you are taking it there and then not get paid what you thought you would.it has something to do with them renegotiating with the customer's. see i don't know crap about trucking so what i have found out will make more sense to someone who is driving or did drive.
*if you go by millage you will have a better chance if you can find a company that will pay you decent "per mile". most are in the low 20's.
*they say they will get you home on the weekends but they don't
*basically your a pee on till you have been with them for 3 years without any accident's ...etc. and that is only if they are a good company. so if you think you can go into trucking and make big bucks at first , you can't. it doesn't matter if your willing to run a month before going home they don't care. and finding those companies that are an exception is almost impossible on the net, talking to companies or even your school. on the net you never know if to believe it or not. if its a bad post on a company you think it may have not been the company's fault, if its a good post then you my believe its someone from the company trying to do damage control. so when he talked to his trainer and laid it all out so did the trainer. He did give us a name of a company that we would have never found. for "student" you can make decent money the first year. Plus be treated with respect. i have not researched this company yet so I'm not going to name names till i do. i just wanted to let people like me who came here looking for the same thing i did, what i had found out. I shake when i think we almost signed with a company who treats you like dog crap and lies to get you to sign with them. once your in there your stuck for at least some amount of time before you can find another company to go to and when you are our age you don't have that kind of time. So i want to thank everyone on this thread and the other thread about TMC that told what happened to them with this company. i believe that people should take those post more serious. I'm not saying either that everyone is telling the truth, but i believe most are as we just got a taste of it right before signing on. all i can say is God was with us. I hope you all get as lucky and please keep searching for that company that will not treat use you just because you are a "student". hum, i wonder why the companies call you a 'student' when you have graduated and have all your license's plus a certificate? anyways good luck to all. -
i can't reply to your message, i don't have enough post. i would LOVE to talk to you. we have very little time. i've already got in trouble and had my email deleted when i posted it so how are we to talk? send me back a message.

Hows he supposed to get any if your with him the whole time?

Actually 'our' story is alittle unbelievable. we met when i was 14 and him 15. we started 'going together' and when i was 18 we got married. got pregnant on my wedding night and that is what stopped us from going on the road way back then. my son is now 20 1/2 years old and a daughter that just turned 18. we have been married 21 years. in January of this year we were inches from a divorce. Never prior to this for 25 years had he ever cheated on me. now i'm not stupid and would not say that if it was not really true as i would look stupid if he had. i would bet my life on it as that is how sure i am. then he had a one night stand with a women from work. i knew, first of all he has never be 1 min. late coming home. he was seeing her on a regular basis for 6 weeks before they were intimate. again i knew but could not prove it. then 2 weeks after his all nighter we had a previous vacation planned and paid for so we went and things changed between us. it was like we fell in love all over again, but this time its a totally different kind of love. when i got home the cell bill was waiting and there was my proof. hour and hours of talking to her when he wasn't with her. he confessed. oh and i'm probably the only wife that ever got a confession on tape. lol. as the months went by i had a nervous breakdown. but i recovered and we love each other more than ever. so i really believe i'm the only one he wants any from. -
So, now without any experience what so ever you have dismissed all of us new drivers who have managed, or are on track to make over $50K our first year. Yes, it can be done and it isn't done by dragging a wife around with you. I dare say, you are doing a good job of ruining your husbands carrier by demanding to be joined at the hip with him. Please, don't say it is TMC's fault. It is your insecurity and lack of confidence in your husband that is causing the problem.

I can't see were you would come up with that i am ruining my husband career by wanting to be with him. There are things he is good at and things i am good at, so again, we make a perfect match. oh and FYI i have no insecurities, if i had i would not be with someone like that. i am a women who can stand on her own as well! Seems like someone is just alittle jealous? I don't want to be with my husband because I'm afraid he will cheat, i want to be with him because he loves me and he wants to be with me. sorry you won't understand any of what I've wrote because apparently you have never experienced real love. and FYI again cheating has nothing to do with love, that is called lust! Love is something that only comes around once in a life time and if you find it you should hold on to it.
I actually feel sorry for people like you.
Signed,
Still ready to go
P.S. Some men might like their "piece" riding along with them? -
