I got a call from LS on Friday that they had one of their new stepdecks available if I wanted to pick it up. I told them I would think about it. I'm really leaning towards getting it as it will open up the taller freight choices to me. It's a 51' Fontaine combo trailer with the sliding CA axle. Just not sure if I should go for it or not. It is a bit heavier than my current flatbed, but I'm not looking to load 45,000# loads anyways. So what y'all think???
To go back to a stepdeck or not???

What are you going to do with you flatbed?
-
With a company like LS I think you can pull a Radio Flyer and make money I personally prefer a step
-
It is not MY flatbed, it is theirs. I'd just drop it off and pickup the step.

get the step then. What's to think about?

I bought the same trailer, a 51' fontaine step spread with a rear axle slider and its right about 12,000 pounds. I like hauling tractors and trucks more than typical flatbed sheot like steel. Get a riser and step into that new stepdeck.
Ruthless Thanks this. -
I know I'd like the lower loading height and the fact I can haul more machinery is a huge plus. But as I look at our load board for the area I live, flatbed loads out number SD loads by 2-1. Granted I'm sure some of the loads can be put onto a SD as well, but I'm not sure about finding loads elsewhere. I o ow when I get out towards WY and MT it is hard to find SD loads, but I can usually find something with my flat. I'd love to get back to hauling tractors and the like but there just does not seem to be that many loads out there for me right now.
Guess I'll just have to keep doing some research. -
Should be really easy...how many loads have you hauled since starting at LS that wouldn't work on a step? For argument's sake lets say less than 10%. Out of that 10% what % of the time would the load you booked instead be for less money, and for how much less? I would be willing to bet that your final answer is not much of a difference. Now, do you recall any instances where you missed out on good paying loads because they require a step?
You know I am partial to step decks, but I think it is a far more versatile trailer than a flatbed. -
