I can be profitable in the 1.40is range. Really whatever fuel is costing me per mile. My only fixed costs:

    - $800/month insurance
    - $160/month log
    - yearly plate etc

I can run it real real low son!

    Equipment is owned

As I said in a previous reply to you,

Outsourcing is all it is. There is nothing wrong with it. Every business is different, each with its own combination of strengths, weaknesses, and preferences.

Everybody outsources to an extent. Some more than others, and everybody in their own way.

You may not outsource very much, whereas another OO may just outsource his mechanic work, or just his tax returns, or just his dispatching, etc.

If the OO sees value in paying for something, and can afford it, then I don't see a problem with it.

Now, I understand that "dispatchers" have a bad reputation. I am sure that they earned it. But, assuming that a dispatcher is professional, competent, hard working, honest, sincere, etc., (which is what I am) I can see how they could be of service to an OO who isn't the best with phone calls, emails, paperwork, and/or isn't able to give the management of loads the attention that it requires.

Evidently, you are really good at what you do. But that doesn't mean that everybody can do what you do, and I don't think it fair to criticize others for choosing to outsource aspects of their business, if from a holistic perspective they have deemed it best for their business to do so; whether it be that an OO chooses to utilize a dispatcher, mechanic, tax preparer, etc.

You just made me laugh...but, in a good way.

Well congratulations on your success. I'm sure being debt free is really nice. But, while you can run it real low, I think we can both agree that nobody wants to run it low if they don't have to.

Evidently you are doing something right; keep doing what your doing, and hopefully things change for the better.

P.S. What did you do to get your monthly insurance so low?

Yes, what Midwest Trucker said... let us not let the dream of truck ownership blind ourselves.

    Thank you...you simplified my point.

Thanks! I couldnt stand the idea of financing a truck. Bought it 4 years ago for 11k and rebuilt it for 21k

my avg rate is around 3ish, but I only run 1-2 days a week. I agree, I wouldn’t run at break even

insurance is low because I leased my truck onto my uncles company. He’s got a good relationship with the insurance he’s been using. Almost 20 years with them. When I started I was 24 with insurance at $700/month, which didn’t make sense but I rolled anyways

I may be mistaken, but it sounds like you are content with the current rate situation? If so, that is ok. To each their own. We are all different.

I started this thread because from what I've gathered, for most OOs on here, only discontent is felt for current rates.

You are not the first guy to share the ability to be profitable at the current rate levels. But you are the first to express a contentment for them.

I think most would agree that they would prefer that rates be higher. I started this thread to share my opinion, and the reasoning behind it, as to why I believe rates are NOT higher than they currently are.

We just don't want to pay 45k for an inframe and $6/gal while hauling $2/mi freight!
The market will equalize eventually but we're going to complain along the way and a little bit more once the dust settles just for good measure.

    - depreciation
    - marketing / advertising
    - book keeping
    - load boards
    - office costs
    - labor / benefits/ taxes
    - permits / registration / IFTA
    - maintenance

You, as many do fail to see “all” your costs whether you realize them to be costs or not.

This is what running a business looks likes.

Here is one of my spread sheets to quote any job I do…. A $6/mile job gets eaten away when you look at the whole picture.

Fancy fancy, doesn’t t mean a single thing in the real world. It just doesn’t, looks good though, very impressive. How do you equate any if it to getting higher rates? Anything can be dissected, broken down and explained. Now, armed with all the knowledge, what do you do with it? Demand a higher rate? Demand it all you want. Doesn’t mean you’ll get it.
