Actually I believe it is the penny pinchers, bean counters & pencil pushers that cause most of the problems in the heavy haul companies.

I've seen the cycle go full circle a couple of times. They go awhile without any major incidents, get complacent & start cutting corners.

It goes from using competent, more highly paid professionals to using whoever is the cheapest, regardless of experience. This holds true for their own employees as well as outside contractors.

Then they hit a bridge, damage an expensive item, or worse yet kill someone, be it an employee or a family in a minivan & the cycle completes itself & competence at all cost is back. Most can absorb a couple of minor incidents & will rock on for a bit. The quickest change comes after a death or two, especially of non-employees.

It's been a couple of years for several of the big players, expect to hear of more problems & devastation as they have gotten down into the muck with their cheap rates & the odds of them having a screwup is leaning hard against them.

The 104,800 number probably comes, because we can run 99000 with reducible load permits, just puts the screws to the oversize guys.

+/- 5% variable for "no onsite scale" ie jobsite loading, is why 99k turned into 104,800

Here's the final numbers. Its on the move again

As part of the agreement, Bay Crane agrees to the following:

    • Issue a $25 million insurance policy with the State of Rhode Island as a co-insured party
    • Pay for the cost of the Rhode Island State Police escort
    • Reimburse RIDOT $60,000 to cover the unusual circumstances brought about by the unique nature of the incident
Oversized truck finally begins trek to Massachusetts
