I was sitting with my head in the clouds thinking of my next irresponsible purchase for my potential failure of a future trucking venture, and was curious if anyone had ever mounted a gang box/job box to their truck behind the sleeper rather than a big shiny headache rack with cabinets? Was looking at a Knaack model 90 that would hold a whole lot of straps, chains, tools and even a small generator. It may look a little hokey, but I’m all about function over looks.

Can't remember ever seeing it on a truck but i see a fair amount of guys pulling Rgn's that have a box on the neck.. don't see why it wouldn't work on a truck, just have to figure out how to mount it.

Was thinking ubolts around the frame. Either directly through the box after drilling holes, or mount the box to a sheet of metal that the ubolts can bolt to.

I've seen at least one Knaack type, and a couple like it with varying sizes of boxes. @beastr123 shows one way. I was always under the impression that the ones I saw were bolted to the frame with pads between. mind you, those Knaack's are heavy duty and heavy, and almost as expensive as a 3 door vault headache rack. For example, the one I remember looked like this one:
It costs $2,150.00 and weighs 400 lbs. and needs a lift to put it on and off, same as a headache rack and you'll have to fabricate the needed securement, but this vault:
costs $2,931.00, weights 300 lbs. and has premade securement. There are cheaper models, and different configurations for this, but IMHO, it's much more functional for the flatbed point of view...and it can be added to and accessorized as you're able or need. Storage area for each is 31 cu ft for the Knaack, and 41.71 cu. ft for the Vault cab rack.

Not to dissuade you if you're intent on the deed, but just raising the issues to consider. The box will be 100 lbs heavier, and 10.71 cu. ft. smaller, less efficient for flatbed work, and need custom fabrication of mounts to secure it, unless you can make existing mounts work without modification. Yes, the vault rack is a bit more, about $800.00, but IMHO, worth it.

That’s like what I had on my last truck. They are good for hanging chains in the outside boxes, but seemed like a lot of wasted vertical space. I want to haul a small gas generator and some hand tools in case of breakdowns like I had on the attempted drive back from Mississippi with my new truck.

Well, nothing keeping you from having a side box, unless there's no room. The vertical area could be increased by hanging things on the doors on the inside, like tool mounts for those tools you mention, the generator also in a side box....but what ever floats your boat. :)
    :banghead:

In hindsight, you might want to opt for one of those drom boxes. :)
Maybe like this one? It definitely will be more expensive than the vault box and the side boxes. :)

I used 22" U-bolts from one of my headache racks. I mounted a small box behind the cab and drilled holes in the bottom of the box after taking measurements.
I also cut some small pieces of wood to use between the box and frame. I pull a flatbed and hopper bottom. So I bought a low-end box to see how it worked.

If you haul over length rebar, beams steel, etc that over 65 feet, you’ll need the overhang off the front and back. Any tool boxes mounted behind the cab are sure to get hurt. Something to think about.
