There's a bunch of truck stops up there in case you don't know yet. I think you get off exit 47 and the truckstops are at exit 52B towards the PA turnpike. Or from downtown Carlise, you can take Hwy 11 East.
I remember our fire dept use to sound sirens. But that was back in the 70's. You'd think they got high tech by now. Where I live now near a nuclear plant, they test the warning sirens the first Wednesday of the month. All the dogs in the neighborhood howl.![]()

I-68 isone hilly SOB.
If you got EZPass I'd just take the turnpike.
The last storm that went thru caused 68 to be shut down.
By the way, those sirens were probably for a cat in the tree.
Injun, American-Trucker and Lilbit Thank this. -
Ya i know thats why im not happy about 68, im very heavy and VERY underpowered...lol who knows I decide in a few hours when i get up lol

FYI__Heavy snow warning--forecast for cumberland md 2nite--1/2 across 68--snow line is basically the pa-md border tonite--calling for much less north--the storm has shifted slightly

68 in a snowstorm is deadly......they can't keep the road clean and on those hills it gets scary
44k in the box westbound past Cumberland on 68...at the bottom of a hill another semi started jackknifing in front of me....I had three choices, put it in the middle, go straight thru him, or off the side of the bridge.......lucky for me he pulled it out right before I had to make the choice...but the middle was looking good......that driver and I took the rest of the miles at around 35 mph cars were spinning out all over the place.....god as my witness that's the only time I was afraid of driving in the winterAmerican-Trucker and Injun Thank this. -
I know you understand you don't like paying that toll--no of us do--and it's worse with new tools(1/1/11)over $60--But one thing is for sure the pike will be open and probably in good shape--at least they do take real good care of it!
But if you want to get around it and stay north--here is what we do--run 70 past pike-turns into 119 north-follow to 22 east--run to altoona 22 east&I-99--then run n on 99 then back east on 22--it runs into 322-down to 81--then back about 15miles to carlisle--the mileage ia about the same as 68--bout 1/2 is two lane--and hilly(we call it runnin the humps) but ir works and it's free and it may keep you out of this storm tonite--although I do not know where storm heads south--cause it looks like all of W PA calling for more snow tonite--but its high dry out here.
Just my $.02American-Trucker, rocknroll nik and Injun Thank this. -
For what it is worth if you are heading east this AM--looks like it is only far NE PA that will be missed--for some reason this thing is swinging south on SE angle like from erie to philly--kinda weird--but the only part of the stae that isnt under winter storm watches/warnings etc--is basically the last 1/4 of the NE part of state--but local radar 11pm news shows it is much heavy to south--md del jersey shore---
Just in case any one was still wondering--be safe have good everocknroll nik, American-Trucker and Injun Thank this.
