I grew up around tornadoes (central Texas). stay away from underpasses they are a bigger danger than protector. Also I have NEVER seen "green" skies with tornadoes, not saying it doesn't happen, just has never been my experience. A couple months ago I was driving across northeast Alabama when a couple of twisters hit, drove right through it watching people hit the shoulder, when I got through it and the skies clear I calleded our resident storm watcher (guyslady) and asked her "are there tornadoes in my area, cause I think that's what I just drove through" lmao. I've always been of the opinion things are going to happen or they aren't, just do what seems the smartest to you at the time and if you live, then you made the right decision.
Instead of having weather service predictions and emergency notifications, I should just contact you for early warning on such events.
CRST wasn't paying attention to anything a couple of years ago near Jackson TN. Drove right into one. The trailer ended up about 1/4 mile away in a field. The tractor had the entire left side crushed - about 100 yards from I40. I don't think the driver made it.
I have been a trained spotter since 1995. I have been in several tornadoes since on the road. 2 were not even announced until after I had been in them. One was in Minnesota and another in Montana. Not usual locations. I stopped before entering a very large storm in Minot several years ago, just before the alert went out because it looked bad. I was watching the weather and when they turned bad, the two lane road did not allow much choice. You also do not have the ability to know every small town and county in the area you are driving in for when the alerts are given.
What was a safe place to park won't necessarily stay a safe place to park. I do agree with you though.
Was heading north out of Salina Kansas earlier this year and drove right into the area that was getting tornadoes and seriously bad storm system. I know it scared the hell out of me and was extremely frightening. Anyone who has been caught in this kind of weather and says its no big deal is either a liar or crazy!!
You run local and have the knowledge of the local weather. When you run OTR like in Montana, you are lucky to even get a weather radio signal. Kind of hard to compare Apples and Oranges.
Last summer I drove through joplin, mo after that huge Mofo tornado demolished a certain part of the town. You could see the path where it hit, and anything not in the path was fine. I did see a dominos pizza joint still standing, and a taco bell but they were torn to shreds. Have to admit it was eerie because being from NY I've never seen anything like it and it was sad to see the families affected. Also I remember PRIME was the only truckload carrier to volunteer free use of their trucks tonhaul water supplies etc etc
