I looked at mine. 2 plates each side, appear to be same thickness. Hard to tell.Does your torque rod bolt directly to frame? I’ve never seen that. All mine have had a bracket, with shims Bolted to frame. Rod bolts to bracket. The only thing that explains different size shims, would be if they’re used to compensate for axle ear differences, not necessarily frame differences. Maybe that’s why their different thicknesses. The example given by @Snailexpress, brings up a good point. If ride isn’t set correct, both axles will track off course. Each in opposite directions. Since each rod is on different sides of frame. Something to consider, when setting ride height.

I think they’re referring to alignment shims on front of spring, not torsion bar shims. It references squaring axle, not centering axle

Honestly there's nothing to read into here. If you didn't change the torque arm and there were no other issues then just put it back how it came out. All those shims do is center the axle.

Believe it or not, not every truck of a specific model has the same specs and there are manufacturing tolerances in terms of the rod length and even as to where the pedestal on the diff is located. Those shims just allow the side to side location of the axle to be fine tuned.

Most likely reasons for why the rod doesn't sit tight to the frame:

Suspension height change (removed rod with suspension aired up, trying to re-install after suspension leaked down or vice versa).

Truck was stopped while making a turn, putting side thrust on the diffs.

This is about torque bar shims. If axles have lateral offset there is not square tandem.

    Ok, thank you.

It’s funny how everyone is changing torque rods in YouTube, and nobody is checking for this. Hahaha.

Mine is like yours, there is a bracket in between the torque rod and the frame. The shims are in between the frame and the bracket.

Good points. I’ll make sure of that next time.

It has to compesate for different axle ear locations, being off a bit. If the shims were to compensate for rod length differences, you’d have to check/ change shims everytime a rod was replaced.Im thinking of a friend, who had a cracked axle housing changed. They relocated the ear on junkyard housing. I bet it has been off center since.

Truck suspension from front to rear tied in the tight knot. Front leafs flattens will change drive line and pinion angles. To set back drive line and pinion angles you need to adjust ride height. If you change ride height you need to center drive axles.
Harbor Freight armed youtubers never heard about this.
