How many chances do I get? -
My wife and I work for Interstate and I agree with Burky. This industry is as color blind as any in the country. While you might encounter problems with a small redneck company in the boonies, I don't believe you have anything to worry about with any of the big companies. Interstate is a great company and you sound like just the type of folks they are looking for. Companies love husband and wife teams whose kids are grown, etc. And being located in Southern CA is great for them as they have a big terminal in Fontana and haul a crap load of goods into and out of the LA/San Diego area.

I don't see a problem with you getting hired. My company has young, old, young, married, single, inter-racial, and even fat and ugly (me) drivers. As long as you are professional and neat and do your job as best as you can, you could work here. I'm sure most reputable companies are the same as the one I work for.
Like it was said before, if you will be discriminated against by a company, you really don't want to work there. it's hard enough out here without having to put up with that.
Good luck! "Keystone LazyMan" -
I do not think you will have a hard time finding a job as an interracial team.
I also don't think you should shell out thousands of $$$ for training. You can get good training in several places, and if you don't work for them you have to pay for it at that point.
Schneider has it's own school as well as Roehl.
Roehl is smaller and I think I will be going there for several reasons. -
First, let me thank you all for your encouraging words. I'm feeling much better!
I was thinking about the cost vs school issue, but everything/everyone seems to be set against getting the CDL thru a company and then being tied to them.
My only option is thru a private school which breaks my heart cause the LAST thing I need is more debt. But, then again, I have to admit that going to New Mexico and living in a motel for 5 weeks doesn't sound too appealing either......I'm torn at this point. -
Unfortunately you end up in debt no matter how you do it. The only question is to whom you owe the debt to the company or a credit card/etc. For us the decision came down to money. We needed the credit we had to survive during school so we let the company finance the school for us. No regrets at this point.

you have no worries - the industry is much more diverse than it once was - hell I was worried about fitting in being overeducated and a cast away from a former career....
you will have no problems because I have found that trucking is a completely performance based job... does not mater who you are - you will be judged mainly on your reliability and proffessionalism - and not your sex color sexual prefs or national origin.
the best thing to do is collect phone numbers of POSITIVE I repeat POOSSSIITTTIIIVVVVEE drivers that can help you along the way to becoming proficient in your new "hobby". -
My hubby and I have made an appointment for Saturday morning (yes, its sad we have to pencil each other in .Im currently working 2 jobs while he works his full time, plus overtime and going to school so we never see each other).
Were going to sit down and discuss whether or not we stick with Plan A which is continue this schedule to get him thru school. His school is ROP so its 10 months. Im supposed to start school around April cause mine would be 2 months. That way we, hopefully, get our licenses around the same time cause Interstate said we need to get hired within 60 day of getting our licenses or we have to take a refresher course.
Plan B would be to chuck it all and apply for Interstates school. I change my mind daily about this. Even though the prospect of going to New Mexico doesnt sound all that great, it depends on the day and the level of exhaustion Im at that day.
Today Im ready to go! Nothing could be worse than what we're going thru now.I think he is too, actually, but Ill find out on Saturday.

I wish the two of you all the best. I'm sure which ever decision you make will be good in the long run for both of you. Can't wait to have you out here on the highways with the rest of us.
