Just trying to get the math right, @Ruthless. Did you pay $5600.00 (or thereabout) after your old 13-speed was delivered to the Eaton dealer? In other words, was this the final "out the door" price you paid for the genuine rebuilt RTLO18718B?

I don't know the exact model off the top of my head but one of our trucks just had an Eaton remain put it when the old trans stripped 3 gears. The reman cost was around $5,500 with a $6,000 core charge. Luckily our old case and everything else was still in good shape so we didn't pay that. Final price out the door including labor and a new clutch was around $8,700 I think.
Had another truck done last year for around $7,900 out the door.
Both transmissions were 18 speeds.
So I would expect somewhere in the $8,000 range to be alright. At least based on my experience.Lepton1, johndeere4020, HandLogger and 1 other person Thank this. -

5 gallons of oil prolly $500, clutch bout $1000; so figure that off the top of my number if you gave an acceptable core.HandLogger, DDlighttruck and johndeere4020 Thank this. -
It's no secret that I'm the student here, so I trust that the next topic won't surprise anyone. Has anyone on the thread -- out of necessity or preference -- changed their gear ratios?
Going [way] back to my street racing days in the south, I've been involved with doing this kind of thing with street cars, but, as I just alluded to, I really don't know what it would take with tandem rear drive axles.
Any thoughts on the difficulty or ease -- and the cost, of course -- of such a change would be much appreciated.cke, MJ1657 and johndeere4020 Thank this. -

JD is right. It's a pot style carrier like a Ford 9" or an old Eaton HO 52/72 in the '72 and older Chev trucks. Pull the axles, drop the driveshafts, pull the pot. Easy. Just bigger and heavier.

Mr @HandLogger, I am trying to figure out how to say this in a way that makes sense...
If YOU were going to drive this truck, I would say, "buy the model you want with t the sleeper you want. Everything ese can be changed...wheelbase, tranny, rears...everything. Build your truck @superhauler style."
But since you're not, just buy the correct truck outright. Theengine you want, 18speed and the correct rears. Truck model doesnt matter (as long as the thing isnt a volvo). Measure twice. Cut once.
