Do they have to have electronic logging devices installed and in connection with the ecm, or will an app for phone/tablet like Big Road suffice?

If you were running 100% legal before it won't make a difference.
I'm not gonna lie, when I was on paper I cheated a bit here and there. I never drove tired and didn't exceed by much. It was usually just to get another 30 minutes to an hour to make it home instead of stopping at the truck stops 45 miles from home. -
