Do they have to have electronic logging devices installed and in connection with the ecm, or will an app for phone/tablet like Big Road suffice?

Has to be connected to the ECM. There are several options that just hook up to the OBD port under the dash.

If it's a glider with a pre-1999 engine they will allow non ECM options.

Do you currently have to run a log book in your operation? If so you will need to install one of the on board recorders in any model year 2000 and newer truck. But i wouldn't let that be a factor in what truck to purchase. There are very simple and cheap options.

I agree. I am not a fan of the ELD but I do have one now. I've been the guinea pig for my company before we start putting them in more trucks.

If you were running 100% legal before it won't make a difference.

I'm not gonna lie, when I was on paper I cheated a bit here and there. I never drove tired and didn't exceed by much. It was usually just to get another 30 minutes to an hour to make it home instead of stopping at the truck stops 45 miles from home.

None of us ran 100% legal before. Anyone that says they did is lying. Like you said, we all pushed it an extra 30 minutes or hour to make it home. Heck i still do. It's not my fault if the closest safe parking location happens to be my driveway.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with this. I know a couple of the older guys that work with me are still thinking it's going to get pushed out. I'm not so optimistic about that any more. We are getting awfully close to the law being in effect for a new law to get rid of it.

The big issues with the elogs isn't the federal regs, but "company policy." There is a tremendously huge difference between the way the regs read and company policies.

The Feds are made for criminals by criminals to give criminals the edge. Company policies are made by deskjockeys to monitor trucks set up in a way that a moron can drive it. If you have/had elogs set up to the federal standard, you will still park in your driveway.

It's not getting repealed. Its been 20 years in the making and every time a congressman takes a serious stance against elogs another fly by night carrier running way over hours gets involved in another multiple fatality accident.

Heard an interesting news report the last time I was in Houston. The news media was reporting that some woman tried to cross the interstate somewhere on the I610 loop and got hit by the truck and the truck didn't stop. The woman died at the hospital and the police were looking for the trucker,

When giving a description of the truck, eyewitnesses said that it was a black F150.
