I wouldn't back up from a 3406B if tuned right they are as reliable as any. Finding a top notch mechanic that knows one can be tricky. The 3ZJ is as good a mechanical CAT as they come in my opinion.

Cat 3406B or a non-peec 3406C with either a 15od or an 8LLod. Either of those transmissions would allow you to run a final drive ratio that wouldn't have you in tears on the interstate and still be able to lift off with loaded trailers in the woods.

    I think it is P&S.

Theres a daycab 1990 T600 and a detach lowboy for sale in connecticut for $10k with a 3406b and a 10speed i think. Its been sitting and needs rubber but is a legit truck, i spoke to the guy twice. He kinda inherited the equipment. (860) 417-6756

Was a good lookin rig. 900k miles posted on new haven CL, located in bethlehem

Dont worry, you can buy a $100k lemon brand new these days.

I personally buy good serviceable equipment at "i give up" prices and overhaul it. Its what works for me. The OP.. Thats his prerogative. Just trying to help.

Thanks, fellas. The one we've presently got in our sights has an E-F 9-speed OD transmission (with 4:11 gearing). This is the same KW T600 with a 3406B I mentioned earlier. Anyone got any good shifting tips to offer for this tractor?

Is the transmission convertible to a 13 speed? If so it's just a matter of dropping in a new shifter with the splitter and run the additional air line to the transmission port. About $300.

Thanks for the information about a possible conversion, @Lepton1. The plate on the transmission reads RTX14609R. Is there a certain way to determine whether or not this RoadRanger is convertible? ... and, if it is, is the conversion something that can be done by less than a pro mechanic? Thanks again, my friend.

I found this pdf. I didn't see the "R" listed. You may want to give EF a call.

I don't know the EF model on my truck off the top of my head, but I will say the money I put into my conversion was well spent. Pulling hills is so much easier when you can keep the rpm's in the power band.
