With a tandem tractor and tri axle trailer 45 ton is fine you'll never legally get 45 ton on it in most states and getting 55 ton on one is harder than you think.

re pony motor vs wet kit.
What about breaking a drive shaft on the pto. Does this happen??
Also, I have seen many people tell me the wet kits tend to leak some. I might chalk
this up to bad maint on their part though. -
My pump is direct mount so no drive shaft, leaks have never really been a problem.

All of ours currently are direct mount. We did have one with a driveshaft a few years ago. No maintenance other that greasing the u-joints when you grease the rest of the truck.
No leaks either. A wet kit and a pony motor have all the same components other than a pony motor has a engine to drive the pump and a wet kit has a PTO that drives the pump. It's been my experience that a PTO requires much less maintenance than a engine.
About the only disadvantage to a wet kit is the trailer can only be used with a truck with a wet kit where a pony motor trailer can be used with any truck. All our trucks have wet kits so it's not a issue with us. People say cost is about the same for either but if you do some shopping you can usually get a wet kit cheaper than a pony motor setup.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
We will be on 7 axles. I'm not the purchaser of the trailer I'm not sure why my boss chose the 45 ton. I will say he's a pretty calculated guy so who knows.

We just bought a new 40 ton Landoll (440). We weighed the options of going with a 55 ton 3 axle and it just doesn't work for us. Sure, we'd be able to haul more but we routinely haul 2 forklifts at once. If we went with the 55 ton there's no way we could stay under 80K and haul 2 lifts due to the heavier weight of the trailer, that and 4 more tires to keep up. We've got a 50 ton and 60 ton trailer for the bigger loads.

Yeah I know empty weight, well length and neck length/ swing area were things he played with for a while with the engineers. Same thing with the glider. Move this tool box, delete that one, replace it with this one , move the fuel tanks here or there a few inches, stretch the slide area for the fifth wheel, adjust axle spacing on the truck and trailer. I will say seeing how much game planning goes into a ground up spec for these "heavy haul" trucks is cool. It makes you appreciate the effort and the opportunity to use it.

Sorry. Didn't catch the tandem tractor. I typically think of tandem plus lift with 55 ton and above. -
