Hey guys I’m looking for information on some axle ratings.
Do they make 40ft trailers with 8k rated axles?

I’m trying to stay under 26k but know a 40ft trailer leaves me the most options for hauling.

I only currently have a class A permit. Waiting to hear back on scheduling to get a full class A.

I’m also trying to avoid IFTA if possible, hear that it’s expensive.

If this is coming off as stupid, don’t hold back let me have it.
Should I just bite the bullet and go full on?

IFTA is not necessarily expensive. The permit is $10, and if you fuel where you run, you shouldn't have to pay much or anything at all.

Trailers usually come with 3500 lb, 7,000 lb or 10,000 lb axles. Anything else is just odd ball. I've not seen everything, but I've never seen anything but the above.

Personally, I'd go full on. I'd get two 10,000 lb axles for a total of 20,000 lb trailer. Limiting yourself to 8,000 lb is really taking a LOT off the table..... unless you have a contract with a company that you're going to specifically work for that will ALWAYS keep you under 8,000. Just remember, the trailer weight has to come out of that. So, if the trailer weighs 4,000 lb, you're only going to be able to take 4,000 lb of freight (generally speaking).

IFTA would be the least of my worries...... seriously.

IFTA is just an organization that deals with the distribution of fuel taxes. IFTA applies to those who operate in more than one (US) state. To my knowledge, there is no legal way to bypass fuel taxes even if you just operate in one state.

IFTA does cost money to keep active, but it’s peanuts. The question isn’t is IFTA expensive, but which states have high fuel taxes. At the end of the day, you will pay for fuel taxes either at the pump and/or on your quarterly IFTA fuel tax filing. It is possible to get a reimbursement after your quarterly fuel tax filing, but it does not mean you are paying less fuel taxes. If anything, you gave the government an interest-free loan. It may be best to owe them money at the end of your quarterly IFTA fuel tax filing.

Don't let this turn you off. There is always someone being "Give it your all or nothing at all!" attitude. Its ok to be weary and be cautious. People say, "Scared money don't make money" well....cautious money don't lose money.

Failure rate is high, planning is a key ingredient. Luck is always a factor. Timing is everything. Sometimes you got to roll the dice but not while starting out. You got to have a plan then work that plan. You got to be flexible to change that plan when things are not working out.
