If you’re replacing trailer hub baskets, should you use a sealant between the gasket and the hub and hub cap to prevent hub oil from leaking?

I have seen people do it, but you don't have to. Just like the axle hubs on a tractor. Some people think sealant is better. But its really a preference

No sealant. Paper gaskets are intended to be installed clean and dry.
PE_T, Rideandrepair, pushbroom and 3 others Thank this. -
The whole purpose of a gasket is to seal the 2 surfaces. Sealant not needed.
PE_T and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I was just curious... I replaced mine a while back on my trailer and I used the rubber textured gaskets...never been a fan of the paper ones... but I’ve noticed that a couple of my hubs have a little dampness, it’s not slinging anything on the wheels but I can’t stand any kind of leak

Might have to snug the bolts down a bit more if its sweating a bit. Sometimes those little bolts loosen up.
PE_T Thanks this. -
I’ll check that cause i torqued them to like 7 pounds I think and checked them after a hundred miles when I done it and I ain’t gonna lie I ain’t checked them since

7 ftlbs?
Your a tad light my friend. Every hubcap I have ever seen is 5/16" fasteners. Should be more like 20.PE_T and Rideandrepair Thank this.
