I am talking about the yearly tab, on the plate, not the light. My truck does not have a license plate light anyway.

The first part of your comment is 100% correct. The second part, not so much. Using a battery powered light does not meet the FMCSA requirements.
    393.23 Power supply for lamps.
All required lamps must be powered by the electrical system of the motor vehicle with the exception of battery powered lamps used on projecting loads.

Yes, I saw it posted after I had posted. I'm still inclined to think that doing so while picking up a trailer at night in the middle of nowhere to get to the shop rather than calling road service for a license plate light.

I wouldn’t call a road service to replace any light honestly. But I also am not one of those guys that think the DOT is going around pulling people over for marker lights. Too many drivers think the DOT are the boogeyman.

I've done it, but it wasn't a light out, it was the whole side and turn signal. I agree with you regarding DOT not being the boogeyman. One guy is saying he's been pulled over for a chicken light out. Sorry, I just don't get concerned about that happening.

If you are observant, Yes you can. ...how many DOT Officers do you know that are observant?

Every light out under CSA carries point violations

CSA violations = revenue for the Department

    ONLY REQUIRED LIGHTS.

I’ve never seen a requirement for chicken lights.

Wow you guys are trying to split hairs.

License plate light being out will get you s warning and maybe a citation .... big deal.

It won't put you out of service and being a warning or a citation, you can get one and just one.

Get it fixed when you can.

As for people saying you can fix it yourself, yeah ... maybe .... I have seen so many hack jobs that would cause Edison to cringe by drivers who didn't understand the basics of electrical tape.

I love it when people are so wrong that what they are wrong about was already stated in this thread.
Why not go back and read the thread and educate yourself. It will prevent you from looking ignorant in the future.
