The correct answer is Maine does not charge sales tax on equipment - so the company buying the equipment will save as much as 9-10% on the sales price - say you buy a $300k trailer that can be as much as $30k - trust me I know
-
Can you do samething with trucks? Title the truck to LLC, then make lease agreement with your second LLC in your home state (with authority) to get IRP plates and avoid sales tax.

I feel lucky in Tennessee we don't have to pay any sales tax on trailers. But they sure stick,it to,us with sales tax on everything else! Permanent plate for a little under $100 from the local court house same place we get our car tags. If you're not a resident or don't have a terminal in Tennessee you might not be able to plate a trailer from here. I dunno.
-
Yeah but you paid 6+% sales tax in addition to that $100. No sales tax on a Maine plate. I’ve tagged many trailers in ME and IL because of that.
-
I'll have to look at my registration and see the breakdown of it. Even if I paid tax on it that's still $106 for a lifetime tag, not one that's only good for 5-7 years where that will be paid again
-
After owning the trailer for 6 months, FL will allow you to transfer to FL title and perm plate without tax. I typically bought 2 or 3 year Maine plates. Either way tax on a $20k trailer would be $1300 in my county!!! That’s a lot of 5 year plates!!! I paid $37k for my last trailer.mslashbar Thanks this.

That way makes since. I did my current one as a "trade" so I didn't get hit with high taxes. I'll have to look at later to see what I did pay

thanks for the advice guys, I switched my registrations/plates to staab/ME. super fast and easy.
