Right now the most I can legally gross running 8 axles is right at 154000 in most states. When I had my 13 I could go up to right around 254000

What a challenge, doesn't sound like that would ever get boring. I was on my way back from a usual job I run weekly and one of the passes that drops into Butte,Mt they were bringing a big electric transformer off the mountain with two tractors one on front and one in back. When they got to the truck stop they pulled the one on back off. I lost track of how many axles and have no idea of the weight but it must have been close to that 250 mark you are talking about, thanks for the reply, Happy New Year to you and yours.

This threads old enough for me to hijack it a little right?

In 48 vs 53ft stepdecks.. How often is the extra trailer length of the 53 enough to get you the adequate deckspace, but the extra metal enough to put you overweight? Vice versa.. How often can the 48 x 102 step legally scale the load but not actually fit it in terms of deckspace? Is this just too much of a gray area to predict?

Im trying to choose my first trailer. seeing a lot of light tank loads right now that require a 53 step. But a steel 53 step fixed spread is pretty heavy and start around $15k used if you can find one. Aluminum and combo 53s seem to start at $20k. Steel/wood 48x102 fixed spread steps start at $5-9k but im not seeing many lucrative loads for them this month.
Take on less debt vs less frequent bread and butter jobs is how im looking at it.

Every load is going to be different.

We are only buying 53' trailers (except double drops) because we do LTL work and are usually to heavy to scale those heavy loads anyway.

    Your operation may be different.

Just bought a used 2008 Chaparral 53' all Aluminium stepdeck with slidding rear axle. Trailer is around 11,500 lbs that included 7 pcs of 4x4 dunnage. 22.5 tires.

My previous rental trailer, 2015 MANAC all Aluminium 48' flatbed weighed aprox 8500 lbs.
