Maybe on a Sunday an hr per train like here on the US 90,FM 78, IH10 Southern Pacific line there is a UP or BNSF train every 15 minutes running east or west. Sundays is slowest day maybe one an hr. I live less then half mile away and hear horns all day long and have a clear line of sight to the tracks.

I stopped reading when I saw the government said he was hauling the base of a wind turbine.IH Truck Guy and SmallPackage Thank this.

Yep. Thought you realized that. The windmills are going up all around there. That is what makes this accident so screwy.
-
I didn’t think this was a wind tower base.
Feedman, Goodysnap, Hammer166 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Looks more like a windmill blade itself.
-
They had 3 trucks lined up with windmill parts to make crossing. Local pd was holding traffic. First truck got stuck.
Getsinyourblood Thanks this. -
I hope they hold people accountable for not calling the number posted at the crossing to notify the railroad.

NTSB issues update on Pecos train derailment - Odessa American
If they were on the crossing only a minute before impact, the headlights of the train would have been visible before they started across.
2nd, according to that story, it was a hydraulic platform trailer, one would assume similar to the one pictured hauling away the remains of that tower in the Instagram link, (which is so laughably not a windmill base as to leave one to wonder how anyone @NTSB made that mistake in their earlier release,) which shouldn't have had any problems getting hung up.

Sounds like a bum route, and a poor or nonexistent route survey screwed this load from the start.Feedman, hotrod1653, Getsinyourblood and 3 others Thank this. -
If they were stuck on the tracks for two minutes then Union Pacific should’ve been notified MINUTES,IF NOT HOURS IN ADVANCE that they had an oversized load that was going down that particular route so they could issue any slow orders or stops to trains expected to pass through Pecos around that time, just in case!Feedman Thanks this.
