But I am sure if your intent was to teach your trainee how to go downhill without a jake brake you would say that and not that using the jake brake was unsafe - unless the road is slippery in which case it would be. Once your tainee showed he understood how to do it would you then refuse to let him use the jake brake afterwards? This IMO is the difference. One is for training, the other is just idiocy.
I acn understand if my trainer wants to teach me how to do it in case my jake brake ever fails, or if its slippery and unsafe to use one. But after I have shown I comprehend how to do it without, the engine would be purring, rumbling however you wnt to say it as the jake break kicked in.
Sounds to me his trainer is more concerned about a little drop in mpg than safety.Last edited: Mar 18, 2016

I will be glad to record me getting out of bed... After you post your luge run... LOL -
Seriously, check out every company he listed!!!
He just separated the wheat from the chaff. -
I ended up at Abilene... Would be happy to answer any of your questions. Only been here 7 months but I'm pretty happy about the place. -
I had one trainer that didn't use the Jake all that much and preferred using the service brakes correctly. And he trained me how to use just the breaks, without the Jake, to go downhill.
Now, in my truck, I prefer to use the jakes, when appropriate, but four months later I find myself heading down a steep and curvy road in snow and ice... Sure glad he taught me how to not use the jakes.
But in the example of the OP, doubt his attempt was to create a teachable moment... LOL -
It's always next year...
(Cub fan here too...)
HalpinUout Thanks this. -
But the OP either needs to get a different trainer, and explain to the Safety Department why, or just suck it up for three more weeks and learn to drive downhill without the jakes, it's possible, and then develope his own driving style after training.
and just where are the FMCSA regulations governing a downhill decent???
