Well do not base your future on this moron trainer! Right now, you are probably (certainly) tired and frustrated. Get through this BS training and then take a huge deep breath, diplomatically ream the trainer using the system that is in place. You should have been given the number for the student coordinator and the training department head, use these people to at least get your views on the record somewhere! They will almost surely be receptive to concise, well documented information. You do not have to be nasty or combative in this process.

Get on with the job of becoming a professional driver in spite of this training process. Get out there and do the job the way it is supposed to be done and get and stay up to date and knowledgeable and strive to do the job better than the next guy. Succeed in spite of the system,, that always makes em scratch their heads!

i have a couple of questions on log books and hours in general and rather than start a new thread ill post here,

    1) the 10 hour break between 11 hours of driving can be off duty or in the sleeper, correct? (1 off 8 sleeper 1 off)

    2) if i drive 6 hours take 3 in the sleeper then drive 5 hours can i take 7 more in the sleeper and get a reset on my 11 driving?

    3) i have 14 hours from when i start my 11 to finish the 11 so i drive 6 hours take 5 in the sleeper then drive 5 more i just violated the 14 hour rule, correct?

    4) do on-duty not driving hours take my driving hours (just asked since i cant find a clear answer, common sense would say no)

    5) does on-duty not driving take away from my 14 hours to get my 11 driving in?

    1) the 10 hour break between 11 hours of driving can be off duty or in the sleeper, correct? (1 off 8 sleeper 1 off)

The answer is yes you may combine lines 1 and 2 in any sequence so long as it is consecutive and equals a total of 10 hours for your break.
There are 4 ways to get a legitimate 10 hour break:
    1. 10 hours consecutive off duty.
    2. 10 hours consecutive in sleeper berth.
    3. any combination of lines 1 and 2 adding up to 10 hours consecutively. Meaning there was no on duty time or driving time between any of the changes of duty status. Here is an example: you have a major case of diarrhea and are getting up every couple of hours. Lets say 2 hours sleeper 2 hours off duty then 2 more in the sleeper then 2 more off duty then 2 in sleeper. Now this is just an example to show you the concept of rule 3. Realistically you would not actually log it that way as you would be inviting unwanted scrutiny from both your safety department and dot.
    4. Split sleeper berth. Under the current rules you must show 8 hours in the sleeper berth then add 2 more either off duty hours or 2 more sleeper berth hours to equal the 10 hour break. Just be aware this will never allow a complete reset for your 14 hour clock nor restore a full 11 hours of drive time. The only benefit the split sleeper berth provision does offer is it extends the 14 hour clock an additional 8 hours (effectively freezing the 14 hour clock).

    2) if i drive 6 hours take 3 in the sleeper then drive 5 hours can i take 7 more in the sleeper and get a reset on my 11 driving?

The answer to this is no. You will have completed your 11 hours of driving within the 14 hour window but will have to get a full 10 hour undisturbed break to have another full 11 hour drive period available.

    3) i have 14 hours from when i start my 11 to finish the 11 so i drive 6 hours take 5 in the sleeper then drive 5 more i just violated the 14 hour rule, correct?

That is correct. Under your scenario you have violated the 14 hour rule by 2 additional hours.

    4) do on-duty not driving hours take my driving hours (just asked since i cant find a clear answer, common sense would say no)

In this case on duty hours will limit your 70 hours available in 8 days. The more time logged on line 4 the less you will have available to put on line 3 (which is where you will be making your money primarily). So if you want to limit your earning potential then by all means show as much time on duty not driving as you like. If not then be very careful what you show on line 4 and spend as little time there as possible.

    5) does on-duty not driving take away from my 14 hours to get my 11 driving in?

Yes it limits your hours to complete the allowable 11 hours of driving within the 14 hour time frame. The only way to stop the 14 hour "clock" is to utilize the split sleeper berth provision or better yet take a full 10 hour break and reset the 14 hour time clock completely as well as the 11 hour driving clock.

orange trucks are good....but so are a handfull of green skateboards

trainers actully go to a class to learn to train (and have to pass the same tests rookies get to take), no team driving, truck only goes as far as one log allows....legaly and theres an extra set of hands to help with these big kites called tarps....o and you learn how to log

I must be LUCKY !! I sign onto Swift and have a great trainer. Driving a new Volvo, running our guts out too! We had a problem with Safety, that got resolved with them and waiting to roll today. I told my DM that I don't want to be reassigned with another trainer, I'll wait it out so we can get the next four weeks finished. After 24 hours we had clicked, took me about a week to get the logbook concept figured out in my head. It's hard to teach a old dog new tricks, but possible!!

Great forum, I'm glad I found this and signed up.
