Keller Trucking in Defiance Ohio hires new drivers and runs PA. They even have spotter drivers in Pittsburgh PA suburbs at Niagara Water. Their are ok company they have 5 days on two full days at house drivers and they do OTR not cross country but Wisconsin and Illinois. Used to go Texas and Oklahoma if in their OTR.
I always like driving cross country myself. Because you’re getting paid just to drive. I always had more free time for sleeping or stopping early if I felt like. Running regional 5 day on 2 full day at house you basically run your full 14 hours everyday. Since you can only drive 11 you spend the other 3 loading and unloading or drop and hook. Short runs and more traffic delays. Not as much fun but if getting home is a bigger priority it worth it.
keller will run you 70 hour in 6 days in there OTR fleet and you stop Saturday evening and do 34 hour reset get up Monday morning go go again.
it hard work for the money in my opinion. I’m just putting it out there as a possibility because they hire in PA. I know the spotter drivers in Pittsburgh suburbs get $26 per hour.

Keller Trucking biggest plus they have Guaranteed minimum pay every week. They pay detection after 1 hour, even if the dont collect from shipper or receiver. It’s $20 per hour. They pay $20 per hour if truck in shop for repairs including their own shop. You still get $20 per hour.
They pay for all the miles you run but you never get less then the minimum guaranteed. It can be hard to run and get a lot more then the minimum guarantee because so much is out of your control.
They pay for reserved parking at truck stops no question asked just turn in your receipt, because they want you to run your full 11 or 14 hour days.Kristina333, Chinatown and tscottme Thank this. -

I know it sounds silly but I've got 3 cats who've traveled the country with me for the last 6 yrs. They're my only reason I'm trying to stay local at the moment. I'd hoped to be home daily or every other day until they're not around anymore and then go OTR. I'm understanding now though that training OTR is prob best for getting paid now and for building up my future in this industry. That said, home weekly would probably be my most realistic goal now.
Don't really have a preference for what kind of freight. I keep going back to hazmat Tankers, but I also realize most people don't start there. So I'm really willing to take what I can get at this point. -

Well....there's your "hard evidence" -- the CDL job market is in the septic tank.
Yes....you're right -- starting out in the CDL world....in the winter....doing flatbed duty....in Transylvania....will very likely suck (big-time).....unless....you're fresh out of the military....& were part of a special ops group....& you simply loved being "hard core".
I don't know of A-N-Y carriers that will take on a rookie driver....for local-type duty....with 3 cats (& that's AFTER your training period -- NOT during)...even in/during a good CDL job market.
Suggestion: look at the local LTL market (Old Dominion, XPO, R&L Carriers, SAIA, etc)....& see if you can get on with any of them in a "dock-to-driver" training program.
Those gigs will be home daily.
Best of luck....

Given your local-only ambitions....I would suggest you take Chinatown's earlier suggestion above -- & go talk to your nearest Old Dominion terminal.
They have a history of (from time-to-time) hiring brand new CDL drivers.
They may well take a shine to you -- especially since you already have all the CDL endorsements they will require.
Go for the "linehaul" type positions; for you, I would stay away from their local pickup & delivery jobs.
Those linehaul jobs will have you home daily.
If you have no luck with Old Dominion -- I would then do the same with other carriers in the LTL sector (assuming they have a terminal anywhere near you, for a reasonable commute):
- ABF Freight
- R&L carriers
- XPO Logistics
- SAIA
- Estes Freight
