Training in state I'm not eligible for CDL permit

    I've been under the impression that I'd have to wait 6 months to get my CDL, but I've done some research, and as far as I can tell, I can actually get my CDL now, but I just wanna double check that I'm correct.

    I live in Maryland, but my dad is in the military and his home of record is Missouri. This means I'm a resident of both states (I can get my license in either one). I have a Missouri non-commercial driver's license, and I've had it for 12 months. In order to get a CDL permit in Maryland, I have to have had my license for 18 months, so I am not eligible to get one in Maryland.

    If I went to Missouri and got my CDL permit there, would I then be allowed to come back to Maryland to train and take my road test? My school offers free training and can provide a vehicle for my road test. I know most people train and take their CDL road test out of state all the time, but since I'm not allowed to get my CDL permit in Maryland, would that mean Maryland wouldn't recognize my Missouri CDL permit?

    My advice would be to call both MD & MO dmv directly and get the answers you seek directly from them..... Different states have different rules....

    I agree with Clausland...SInce you are taking the test in Maryland with an out of state license chances are they will require you to get a Maryland Permit to take the tests.

    You will have to take test where you got the permit from. Once you passed and got your cdl...you will have to transfer it to state you reside in

    Who lives at the Missouri address that's on your drivers license?

    Are you over 21 yrs. old? Reason for the questions is so we know if you can drive interstate or intrastate.

    it does not matter.. the Active Military hold that state as their Place of residence.

    I did not hold any property in OR nor any house, yet for 20 years OR was deemed my place of residence since I was active military.

    Okay, so can I get the permit from Missouri, train in Maryland, then take the skills test in Missouri?

    I'm guessing I'll have to call different DMV's to see if they rent vehicles to use for the test?

    I guess the rules have changed since I was in years ago. Could keep your drivers license from your home state no matter where you were stationed. Didn't have to keep your home state license unless you just wanted to and it was legal either way. Most guys kept their home state license out of pride for their state.
