My husband and I are looking into Central Refrigerated so our training cost will be covered. I'm curious as to how much money the average student should have saved up before going to training to cover meals and such not counting the cost of personal gear and supplies. Basically, I don't want to run out of money in the middle of training or while out on the road with my trainer.

You run out of money while in training, you can get cash advances. But too many of those are no good.I would bring at least $500.00 maybe more since its the both of you.

Thanks pattyj, we were thinking $500 each would be a safe bet... but I would rather be safe than sorry.

My trainer was awesome. He allowed me to use the fridge for some perishable food. He gave me half the storage available in the truck.

My friend was not so lucky. His trainer made him store his luggage and sleep on the narrow top bunk!

You can get non-perishable foods at www.minimus.biz. Not the cheapest but some good items for the time with a trainer. Once you are a first seat driver there will be many more options.

I got the combo PB&J packets. Add a loaf of bread and you are set for a week or more.

Training is like a survival course. Do what you have to to get that upgrade! Then get back to a more preferred budget.

You can eat on about $12 a day, figuring two meals, without being extravagant. However, I've noticed so many drivers who buy big gulps and chips etc all day long. (for munchies) These are expensive items, $3-$4 a pop. And that adds up, right ? Do not buy toothpaste, laundry detergent, bar soap etc at a truckstop. Plan ahead and get them at home. Do not ATM your front money at $2 per transaction. That's really dumb. Keep a little diary of your total expenses for a week and then you can see where your money goes.

I would take at least a grand since it's the two of you.
