I go to Atlanta GA for orientation. Do you guys know if it is possiable to request a trainer that does not smoke, or at least does not smoke in the truck? I have nothing personal against smokers 2 of the most important people in my life smoke (mom & dad) but I do have asthma.

 

I tried the no smoking trainer. Sat for a day and a half. They just "graduated" a class of trainers and still nothing. This was in Omaha. The safety person in charge of trainees in the motel suggested I take a smoker as it would cut my down time. When they do thier head count and meeting in the mornings at the motel corner the safety person conducting the meeting afterwards and explain your situation and ask what they might be able to do for you.

My second trainer was a smoker and when I explained how I had a sore throat and cough from spending 5 weeks in a truck with a chain smoker he was very good about not smoking in the truck and only did it a few times when he did.

A lot of this will depend on your trainer and how serious they are about thier job. Remember you are there to learn and get used to company policy. They will use you for your log book no question, but the right trainer will also make sure you are as ready as you can be when he cuts you loose.

Mouth shut ears open and you will do just fine. Be safe and good luck.

 

Yes you can request a non-smoking trainer. Most companies offer that but, you might have to wait a bit for one, they want you paired with a trainer that you are likely to be compatable with.

I'm surprised that your recruiter hasn't already mentioned that.

Thanks you guys. I think I will request a nonsmoker but if there are not any then I will take a smoker. Its only for 2 months I can tuff it out if I have to. LOL I really hope I get a good trainer that really cares and likes his job. The trainer I had for the month and half with Colonial was great she had a lot of patience and more confidence in me than I did it was good for me. I remember one trip we took to South Cali she had me drive over these mountains on the way back I can't remember the name but Oh My Gosh when I finally got to the other side in Arizona I felt like getting out of the truck and kissing the ground I was so happy. LOL

 

Any company that will get you a years experience can be considered an asset. You may have to get used to being called "Wiener Wagon".

With Werner, you should still learn to keep a paper log book even though they have the paperless ones. But yes, I would get it done and over with as soon as possible. Taking a seven day break will interrupt the continuity of your training and should you get a decent road instructor at first, you don't want to change that.

And hey! If you have questions, you still have us. Right? BTW, I think the non smoker request has become pretty standard these days. Used to be students would start out non smokers and by the end of the training they were smoking Camel non filters with nicotine stains on their fingernails!
