Our instructor at the tech college I obtained my license from would tell us to get some momentum going before we hit the big hill i always thought it was kind of crazy to start speeding up before the hill. I think the reason was he didn't want someone down shifting on a hill I don't know to be honest. What would you say the correct way is? Not too many hills down here in the deep south.

Momentum is good but keeping your RPM's up is the most important thing. The engine fan needs to spin fast to remove the excessive heat from the coolant. Many of these megas teach to lug the engine down to 1000 rpms to conserve fuel which is a recipe for cooking an engine on an incline especially heavily loaded.

Yeah It was a big NO for us to lug the engine that was made pretty clear. I was fortunate and had instructors who had 20+ years under there belt. My school was 10 weeks 220hr course full time..I had a buddy go through a 2 week course and I was thinking how the hell did you learn everything in 2 weeks. But I guess that's what they call a CDL mill.

Well, just maybe you'll get luck and get a seat beside a sweet young thing. Of course, if your luck is like mine, you will be seated beside a 350 sweat hog that hasn't bathed in a week or so......
