Waiting to be loaded here at the paper plant in Glens Falls NY. Boy, is it chilly. Nightfall came and it is around 50 here. No AC tonite, I broke down and put a jacket on though I m still in shorts and flip flops. Got a two stopper to Clinton IL south of Bloomington for Monday and second stop to Edwardsville KS near KC area. Beautiful up here in the Adirondacks and Catskills. First time to upstate NY. Been through Buffalo a couple of times en rout to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. 14 is almost up. Uy vey, gotta safe mode back to I 87 to a service plaza. No truck stops around here. Deuces.

Yeah, that would be great. I see similar signs from time to time for park and ride lots, the commuter rail parking lots around some cities. I would be interested to see if the park and ride system works and gets good reviews.

Michigan has started putting them in and making them active at truck stops and state rest areas. I think it's a nationwide trend; having trucks run out of hours and having nowhere to stop but an on-ramp is a very dangerous situation.

With the departure of Anne Ferro as head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, progress on new and current rulemakings is likely to stall, says Annette Sandberg, former FMCSA administrator. Sandberg, who now owns TransSafe Consulting, commented on FMCSA actions at this week’s FTR Transportation Conference.

“Having an acting administrator slows things down a bit,” she said. “If a name comes out soon, I suspect we won’t see much before the end of the year, especially anything controversial.”
The agency was scheduled to published a proposed rule for new minimum insurance requirements this month, but Sandberg expects both that and the perpetually delayed entry-level driver training rule to be held back until a new administrator has been named.
The final rule on the electronic logging device mandate probably won’t be appearing any time soon either, said Sandberg, noting that it is both controversial and technically complex.
“This is one Congress has been trying to encourage the agency to get out by January, but I think that is a very aggressive schedule given the number of comments and a number of technical issues brought up in the comments,” she said.
Sandberg did note that even in the absence of a final rule, the FMCSA has been pushing carriers to implement e-logs as quickly as possible.
“I’ve spent most of my time this year working with carriers that have not adopted e-logs and they suddenly undergo an audit from the FMCSA focused on hours of service compliance,” she said. “If they have any kind of GPS on trucks, it’s easy to prove a false log case pretty quickly, so the agency will give a proposed conditional rating, and the only way they can get it upgraded is if they agree to implement electronic logs.”
The FMCSA is also circumnavigating formal rulemaking on the issue of sleep apnea. The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners has given the agency a tool to address sleep apnea testing.
“If you look at the medical protocols the agency released to these providers, you’ll see instructions for when they should require drivers to do sleep apnea testing,” says Sandberg.
Sandberg also cautioned the audience at the conference of several upcoming or active regulations they need to pay attention to. Starting in July, new drivers will have to obtain their commercial driver’s licenses through their home state, which could be a problem for drivers who travel to out-of-state schools for training. Large carriers also need to be aware that under a recent change in enforcement, violations for one carrier could be applied to other carriers owned by the same company.

I wanted to tell you how sorry I am that your friend is going through this, jaso. Remembering what my friend had written just a few short weeks before he was killed, seeing your post about the health effects that your friend has suffered and knowing that gamma has a cousin that was killed in action makes you realize the true toll of 9-11. It is heartbreaking. Your friend and his family, along with gamma's family and the family of my friend will be in my prayers.

poor trip planning and lack of common sense is the ONLY reason to be on a on ramp
but most drivers do not believe that anything was their fault

I have parked on a ON ramp on purpose but never a off ramp

I don't know that any of what I have seen would have any effect on you, Pete. Half the time when someone sends something in it only has half the information that you really need, sometimes they don't even put a state!. I try to pass it on when it is something specific and I always try to put the time on it, but when I see many folks saying this or that is happening on a particular roadway I try to pass it along as a general heads up for that area. I have a general idea of the way that you travel but have never sat down and actually looked at your routing .....because I know you stay on top of things. :biggrin_25519:
