Hey guys, well I stated not to long ago a childhood friend of mines started orientation last Wednesday. At first he said he was going to run as a company driver, well I spoke with him today and the where doing skills test and some driving. He said he has since changed his mind to lease. He said TA has alot of incentives set up so they dont fail. ie: accounts, first 3weeks with no payments, and atleast 3000 miles per week. He mentioned some others. He said that after the lease he has the option to buy the truck. I was confused with that because I thought your weekly payments is made so you can own the truck after your lease agreement. Can someone pleasexplain this. That kind of seems like a rip off. He told me that more then 1/3 of his class is leasing.

    dennisroc Thanks this.

those are all lies that leasing tells students
bottom line is no student should have to learn how to run a business by leasing
until he learns more about driving and the job

3 weeks into a 6 month lease you get homesick decide you cant be away a month at a time then what

you go company later you see how it all works you can lease
you go lease and it isnt working you can't go back to company

no one gets 3000 miles every week EVER
there are delays at shippers and recievers
weather hold ups at fuel stops etc

jungHo, gntorres61, dennisroc and 2 others Thank this.

transam will send you a bus ticket because it is refundable for them
plane tickets are not............too many people sign up for orientation and don't show up
transam will reimburse you if you fly up to the cost of the bus ticket
i was able to book a flight far enough in advance that it was cheaper to fly
Transam will send a taxi to pick you up

    truckertravis84 and jdmredneck33 Thank this.

Travis talk to your friend in a month. There is no guarantee for miles. They make leasing sound really really good but they get bonuses for you guys to sign, they get money for getting you to lease and we get nothing by being honest. We get nothing by telling you not to lease and they get money to talk you into a lease. I stated the money part three times so it would sink in. There is much more responsibility when you lease and the pay is about the same. If you have never delivered a load why do you think you can run a business in this industry? Good luck to you friend but odds are he won't make it 3 months. If you do not live in one of our lanes you will not go home very often. Sure you can go home when ever you want but that payment is still due. Learn the business first and once you feel comfortable then lease if you want but learn on their dime. Get stuck on ice $600+ out of your pocket, mechanic Fs up your APU $900 out of your pocket. Can't run in Buffalo cause of 4 feet of snow, still have to make payments, $600+ a week. Get lost for an hour that's fuel and time out of your pocket, unless you know all the roads in this country it will happen. Receiver decides to take 11+ hours to unload you how will you deal with that? Your trailer is overweight and have to get load reworked and costs you six hours(350 miles) so you have to shut down late and be short miles plus have to reschedule delivery(marked late), has your friend or you encountered any of these situations? These are just a few things in this thread that we have gone through. Read the thread. Go ahead and lease but don't curse us cause you fail. We warn every one. Some listen and the ones who know the industry better than us with out ever picking up or delivering a load, lease quit in the first 3 months and I am being generous with that amount of time. BTW at the end of paying 6 years of $600 a week you can buy truck at full market value, do the math. Great deal, no detention, layover pay. If trailer breakdown and your stuck for a few hours while mechanic fixes it, guess what? No pay for that either. Like I said talk to your friend in a month or two. If he never makes a mistake, goes home, plans trips perfect or hits bad weather he should be OK. You ready for that?

One more thing, if this industry is so easy why do these companies spend MILLIONS to recruit? This is not an easy career most fail. I gave just a few examples. If you read through this thread and the old one you will see many examples of situations that are not in your control that will affect you as a driver and cost you time and money. Take out a loan from the bank and then instead of making payments tell them you had a bad month or months, see if they don't snatch that collateral. Why would you think this is different? Good luck to your friend and to you truckertravis if you lease with new experience. But what ever you do if you fail do not blame any one but yourself cause you have been warned

I understand everything your saying, I thought he'd Drive company for a while and see how the rest of his orientation class does with the lease. Im definitely going to stay in touch with him. He should be able to stay out longer becase he is single and he is a go getter and just wants to run but like you stated you have expect the unexpected. And plan accordingly.
