Didn't think about it that way, but it does make a lot of sense as people were spending more on what was needed and not able to afford the things they would like.

:lurk:If there truly is a shortage of drivers, you'd think trucking companies would be more actively engaged on making driving conditions and benefits better. It seems they still have the mentality, to a large extent that, "drivers are a dime a dozen." That mentality does not promote conscientious, hard working drivers, but drivers that are merely interested in the pay. It's surprising how many companies don't have many amenities on their trucks (APU, refrigerators, GPS, etc.). Like, they are geared to O/O or lease. Even such drivers would benefit from a loaded truck.

Trucking companies need to treat drivers with more courtesy and respect. I know some of my formed opinions are due to the company my husband is currently employed by. I have read on the thread of others experiencing occasional excessive wait times, breakdowns, etc. and situations that lessen their weekly pay. Such issues need to be addressed to improve driver retention. It is necessary out of fairness to the drivers who, though most enjoy the job and seeing the US, are away from their families for weeks at a time and sacrificing much.

I appreciate you, HTQ, and others who attempt to advocate for better working conditions and policies for truck drivers. As you said (to George), the squeaky wheels gets the grease! There is a way, time, and place to do so....seems like it's potentially an ongoing job in itself (advocacy)!:occasion5:

There needs to some major changes to the industry. One the CDL should be a federal standard not on a state level, a state one could be had but have to drive only in that state. The trainers should be federally certified and be held to certain standards, this way companies are all held to the same training standards. The shortage of drivers is due to lack of training and false advertisement of new drivers. The freight is down cause we just went through a very cold winter, it is just starting to warm up so lets see how the next few months go before we start to worry. People don't like to shop in -10 so the DCs are full right now. No worries people usually can't wait to spend their money. I have a few more thoughts but a little to tired right now.

    Be safe out there

Trucker Charity Inc added 3 new photos.
Trucker Charity Inc with partnership with The Association of Christian Trucker's has opened the food pantry to trucker's located on I-70/exit 68 in Brownstown,Illinois.

Drivers needing help can stop by 7 days a week to receive up to 3 days of food to get them by.

In order to fulfill this portion of our mission we can't do it without your help. You ask "How can I help?"

One way is stop in and donate any non perishable food item, disposable razor's, soap shampoo, can openers, glad ware, feminine hygiene products, and any other basic need that a driver might need to get by until they receive a check or an advance.

The other way you can help is go to www.truckercharity.org click on our store tab and find the driver food for 3 days and purchase as many as you would like. Or make a donation through PayPal and specify for the food pantry

There has never been a driver shortage. CDL mills churning out drivers every day.

The shortage is quality drivers, those are precious and rare. ;)

    That's what has bee
That is one thing that I have picked up on this forum. And until they set a formal training standard like Jaso suggested there will still be a shortage of quality drivers who actual take pride in their work.

At the Walmart in Las Lunas New Mexico. Got here with 35 min left on my 11. Spent the night on the street nearby their property. Just waiting for the paperwork, and my 10 is almost up. Leave it to Walmart. 5 hours on the dock. But it didn't hurt me this time.

With such a high percentage of new TransAm drivers signing a lease, this TransAm thread is a very appropriate place to post this information. Take note new TA lease signers, you may need to ask for help from this service.
