The accident occurred around 3 a.m. March 29 when 53-year-old Robert D. Drewelus was traveling southbound on Interstate 75 in Sarasota, about 60 miles south of Tampa. He was traveling in a tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline, according to the Bradenton Herald.
A 16-year-old was driving a Volvo S 80 directly in front of the tanker when at some point the tanker truck struck the rear of the vehicle. The tanker truck then veered off the road, overturned and burst into flames. Drewelus was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Bradenton Herald.
The 16-year-old and a 15-year-old passenger fled the scene of the crash, but the vehicle was later tracked down by police.

Nobody said tankers can't or don't crash. What's your point?MidwestResident Thanks this.

Why did they flee if the driver hit him
MidwestResident Thanks this. -
You do have lots of control; it's just a matter of safe driving for conditions.
Milk is in a smooth bore tank so those drivers know to plan ahead and stay aware of their surroundings.
Some on here think tanks is a bomb on wheels and that's not true at all. If a driver decides to drive down a mountain at 80 mph, then yes, there will be problems. You won't have problems pulling tanks if you use safe driving practices and common sense. I made $65K hauling mostly acid through 48 states in all weather/all terrain and never had a problem. Many, many tanker drivers make much more than I did. I was content so I stuck it out.Adrienna Brown, MidwestResident, BostonTanker and 2 others Thank this. -
He cut the tanker off , sent a picture to snap chat after killing the 31 years experience driver then ran . Nice

Some of the best laughs I get on here are from people who repeat what they've heard about tankers.MidwestResident Thanks this.

Can't have baffles with food grade eh. Can't clean the tank so it'll get contaminatedBostonTanker Thanks this.

They were probably brake checking the truck driver.MidwestResident and G13Tomcat Thank this.

Coming on my fifth year of tankers, all chemical and other than a few compartments I've never hauled or seen a baffled tank. One of the biggest myths out there about tankers. Everyone seems to think baffles are standard. They are not, I assure you. There is nothing horribly dangerous about a smoothbore.MidwestResident, G13Tomcat and Jonkie Thank this.
