But if we "outlaw paper" guys do this we get called cheaters and dangerous. Not everyone lives around all 2 lane and gravel roads so the guys with 4 lanes should legally pull over to the side of the road and take his 10 hour break or even his 34 hour restart even though he is 1,20,30,45 minutes from home. Just by the way alot of guys on E-logs talk they use something like
"this all the time when they are cutting it close. This is illegal unless you are telling the truth. E-log guys not getting caught while cheating is still wrong and no better than paper guys cheating. Crappy companies and drivers running E-logs can and still do cheat on their logs everyday. So alot of the E-log guys just cheat with a "push of the button" while we real truckers have to take an extra second to use a pen and paper.
Whats the difference here? Because you are willing to cheat with technology you are better than us?
Not pointed at you Bayle but the EOBRs class all together. Just a freindly discussion on this crap. -
No problem, I was just throwing that out there to answer a question, knowing full well, paper guys might come back saying its cheating etc... 6 one half dozen as the saying goes. I used it once, and not cheating. Stuck at a coke place in Atlanta, took over 4 hrs to unload with appt and no parking. Had one minute left when they handed me my paper, we have a terminal about 20 min away, so I went there.

Oh come now, I have not "preached" the virtues of e-logs. I do believe that they can and do make those who adapt more efficient and loads gets planned and scheduled better. When done right, that improves the bottom line. For me, that has been the case. I haven't stated it thus far in this thread, but both my revenue and net was up, year or year for 2011, and also was up on both counts in 2012 over 2011. I am not going to state that there were extreme gains or some such rot. But there were measurable gains. You can ask my tax man.
And as much as many chose not to believe it, I am able to do as well or better than on paper, and still get by the house at least once, and usually more, during the week, and am home on weekends/holidays and still take at least two weeks off a year. And I am not on any dedicated runs or anything like that. So it is doable for those that find a way. There are those who will curse the darkness, and there are those who light a candle. -
Let's see.... How do I with e-logs handle that... hmmm. Well, I have strategically arranged several locations at varying distances and direction from the house in which I can drop a trailer and do a personal conveyance / off duty driving and bobtail home. It is amazing how those that have never thought these things thru before have such a brain cramp when confronted with it. Makes me wonder who the fools are. Those on e-logs or those that can't think their way out of a 55 gallon drum and solve simple problems like the one you stated. Again, my contention is and always has been that those that whine about this stuff the most are ones that have no clue what they are talking about, and possibly have a deep rooted fear of the unknown and are just lashing out against those that have lost any fear they had a long time ago.

True, some companies do not have that option. But the driver does have the option to work there. It may be done away with, but only after FMCSA makes the change. They are on record in their defining what the rules allow, that personal conveyance, under certain conditions, is allowed. Be it on paper or e-log.
-
Just some questions so don't bite my head off... So what has changed then? The lanes you run, the freight you haul, actually pay attention now that you have to pick your freight better than when on paper? Work harder now than before? I know there is no way possible to run what I do now if I had to run E-logs without losing $700-$900 or more per week. I go home whenever I am within a few hours of the house even if its out of my way. I never sleep by the house in my trucks for my break. I run 2 loads and back everyday and if somebody other than me cause a delay that should keep me from my normal run than I still go home(unload & reload for the next day). I am glad guys in an OTR type of operation doesn't have to deal with the everyday burden EOBRs put upon us.
-
Well based on my tax bill for the last two years, I wish that 20% pay cut were true! It might be for some, but then, they have the choice to stay or leave that situation.
I have always been amazed at those that may experience such things, continue to stay where they are instead of seeking out something better. After all, this is not the former Soviet Union (yet), and people are still allowed to seek other employment opportunities. But so many folks will just stay where they are and whine. Oh well, to each his own. -
Do you realize fuel is $4/ per gallon right now? Why would I or a company waste our money and drop the trailer and bobtail home? I own my equipment and it goes to the house with me. So what will you do when "not if" they take away personal conveyance? This is something that guys running E-log exploit all the time when it fits for them.
