We have been team owner ops leased onto a carrier for about 2 years. We would like to get our own authority and book our own loads. But I'm not sure how to transition without being off the road long. Can I still run with my current company while I set up our authority? How long does it take to transition? I here its 21 days for the DOT Number and I have no idea how long for the plates. I'm just starting to look into this so I don't have a real plan in place yet.

Of course you can, you can continue to run under an authority until you are ready to pull the trigger on day one of the authority.
    One day.
Yep, but here is the mistake you made: your plates.

You don't need new plates if you own them; you just need to transfer THE TRUCK (not the plates) to the new authority. Others can give details for this, but I stress this with everyone - GET YOUR OWN PLATES!
