The one reason I don’t want an 18 spd is the added cost of a reman. Friend of mine has a 550 Cat 18 spd. $7,000 for a Weller reman @ One dealer, within a year, another $ 6,000 for Another Weller reman @ a different Dealer. Weller claimed Driver abuse, no warranty coverage. The added cost $1000-$1500 over a 13 is a waste. Unless Heavy Hauling. When the Cat 550 first came out, you had to order 18 spd. to get warranty coverage. So everyone ordered them set at 475 hp w/ 13 spd. After 375 k. When trans Warranty expired, They turn it up to 550 and drive it right.

A transmission ought to last about 2,000,000 if it hasn't been abused. I would have taken my chances on that 18. Looks like they walked away from this deal with extra bonus profits on a free 10 speed. You should have bartered at least the 10 sp core value to offset some of your shop costs.
Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I checked last night to see what the core cost is for that 18-speed.
You guys are exactly right.
Man I would never get rid of that!Diesel Dave and AModelCat Thank this. -

Seems like most places would take the parts cost and double it if not more on labor. How many hours would you have in dropping the trans out, rebuilding it, then reinstall?
Diesel Dave and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
My mechanic said transmission shop charges $450 flat for labor , rest - parts needed to be replaced . Oct 2017 they did my 13 speed rebuild - $2450 , mechanic said it was really in bad shape per tranny shop ...you will never find out what is true , heard some people replace worn gears with Chinese parts , some replace not everything that should be replaced etc ..

For what it's worth, I would really have somebody look over that 18 speed.
