Transmissions, Training at Automatic Only Companies?

    I have made my decision to go to Jim Palmer trucking they will train manual trans and I'm moving to ID and they will put me regional 11 western so it will work out in sure. This is their info, what do you all think? positives and negatives welcome.


    1-year Commitment with no cost to you ($3,500 Value)

    What’s Paid for:

    • Greyhound ticket or a reimbursement for the cost of the ticket on your first paycheck
    • Breakfast and lunches (while at the terminal)
    • Lodging based on double occupancy


    Week One:

    • $150 Admin Fee due
    • Permit test
    • Drug test
    • Sign 1-year contract (2-day grace period from the day you first arrive)
    • DOT physical
    • Practicing driving maneuvers (i.e. Shifting, ally docking, backing, 90 degree turns etc.)
    • Dispatched to go over the road, one-on-one with the instructor by the end of the week (Thursday or Friday)
    Once Dispatched:

    • 3 weeks OTR team driving ($200/week cash advance available as an option)
    • You will go through a series of evaluations based on driving techniques until you and your trainer feel confident that you will pass your road test
    • Route back to Springfield/Missoula to take CDL road test


    Upon Receiving your CDL:

    • Dispatched with trainer
    • Start your C-Seat miles (30,000)


    C-Seat:

    • 10,000 miles to completion
    • $600/week or .12cpm (whatever pays more)
    • Upgrade to B-Seat


    B-Seat:

    • 20,000 miles to completion
    • $700/week or .14cpm (whatever pays more)
    • Trainer loosens up with you, able to drive later in the evening and after dark
    • Go on a Solo run as a B-Seat to complete training


    Once Solo:

    • .40cpm
    • Up to an additional .05cpm for fuel incentive
    • Approx. 2,500+ miles/week
    • $900-$1,100 /week take home


    Jim Palmer/Wil-Trans OTR Company Position



    • Running lanes of your choice (East coast to Mid-West, or West coast to Mid-West)
    • Take your home time wherever you like… want to go sit on the beach for your off days? No problem!
    • OTR 3-4 weeks at a time, 3-4 days home, OTR 3-4 weeks
    • .40 cpm with the opportunity to earn +.05 with fuel incentives (the smarter you run, the more you earn)
    • New updated trucks equipped with APU’s, inverters, 24” flat screen TV’s with 200+ channels and the NFL Sunday ticket
    • 2,500 – 3,000 miles/week
    • $900-$1,100+ weekly take-home


    Jim Palmer Regional Position



    • Run Western 11 states
    • Highest paying fleet
    • Home every 7-14 (dependent on where you live)
    • .45 cpm as a company driver
    • 70% of load as lease operator
    • 2,500+ miles a week
    • Mostly dry-van freight and drop/hook
    • Guaranteed Thanksgiving and Christmas off every year
    • Family owned and operated company where drivers are family, not numbers
    • New, updated trucks with APU’s, inverters, and 24” flat screen TV’s!

    Okay asked. They said you need to have chains but do not force you to use them and when to bad they shut you down. As well no force dispatch

    Believe it or not, it's truer than you would believe. It is not bad to have a manual parked downtown. It's not likely it will be stolen. (They would be doing me a insurance favor actually...)

    As far as Mack E-6 thoughts with the Auto Restriction on the CDL, I wonder whose bright idea is that? Come on, if you have to have training to have a 40 ton 18 wheeler for a living surely a small detail like a manual or auto is NOT that big of a deal when you understand both systems in a big truck. That's almost as grotesque as having a say a restiction against driving old iron that has no computers anywhere. (I don't want to give anyone any ideas...)
