I would deadhead. Under no circumstances am I hauling freight at a loss. You could probably deadhead 450 miles out and get a load going the remaining 450 for 1500 pretty easy. But even if you didn’t you still have your dignity knowing you didn’t haul freight for .77 cpm. And you’d be home sooner.

I never hauled literally anything for 77 c a mile but did deadhead out of Denver, co 550 miles to Des Moines, IA and took a load there for $700, to unload after weekend - 15 miles from home parking.
That technically makes it 70 c a mile.
But had that same load been offered in Denver, CO I would have taken it, if there was nothing else around.
Dignity?
This is business, not personal life, every darn single dollar counts.
Think like a business owner, not a steering wheel holder.
The last thing I need is some moralizing from morons here and telling me what is good or not.
My house is paid for, so is the truck and the trailer.
I am debt free with growing IRAs accounts, good savings on both personal and business side.
Stepdaughter brought up and married, doing well on her own. I plan to send my son to a good college in a few years, 60k a year tuition and board, I'll sacrifice. When he graduates, I'll be pretty much ready to retire.
That's what I reserve dignity for. -
Chicago - Denver is a money maker lane.
Denver - Chicago is a backhual lane.
The money maker must pay well enough that even if you deadhead 900 miles back home, it should still be worth taking.
Backhaul lane is pretty much an addition. Whatever they pay is almost like a bonus.
Irregardless, all things equal, deadheading costs more than taking the cheapest freight there is.
I don't go to Denver in recent years but it was not so uncommon to take a heavy beer load for 1 dol a mile to Chicago, in Winter time, for better traction, despite the possibility to get $900 seed load from Lincoln Ne to Chicago.Last edited: Jan 14, 2023

What’s with the name calling @TallJoe ? Did I call you a moron? I haven’t personally attacked you the first time. This is now the second time you’ve attacked me.

What's the significance of them to me?
Everyone here lives in their own reality and will act with the realm of options available to them.
I am in the pursuit of my own happiness not a popularity contest on the internet.
Things we were discussing in this thread were of a very academical nature, including the example of the rates amplitude of 7000 - 700 that that moron took literally.
You yourself could not stick to the subject, saying things not to the point.. -
I told you what dignity meant for me. -
F...this.

Secondly you are part of the problem with the wild swings. By your own admission, twice now. You claim that you will haul freight at a loss. When someone else who is rather successful says they will not; you again go to baseless attacks. Claiming I haven’t been doing this long. When come to find out I have worked the spot market for two decades now. As long as your whole driving career.
Pay attention, you might learn something- small JoeGreenPete359, Siinman and Ruthless Thank this.
