I have never hauled spuds commercially, but a friend of mine has. And he was telling me about guys like you.
One receiver told him about a guy that would run 60,000 lbs of payload. Slightly over weight. And run all back roads from FL to OH, never going by a scale. -
You'll need bobtail insurance and a temporary tag in most cases. If you are buying it from a dealer they sometimes provide them, if they don't then ask them what you need. It's best to call the states you'll be traveling though in advance and ask them what you need to legally cross their state and ask the state where you purchase the truck from what you need to remove the truck once it's purchased. Or if you are going to look at one and aren't sure, and decide to buy it then to be on the safe side go to that states tag department with proof of insurance, the sales documents, two forms of ID.
Then call the other states BEFORE you get to them and ask. Put a sign on the door "In transit, not for hire" Make sure you have a log book and the rest of the documents. I've never bought a truck in my state and that's what I've always done and had no problems. Plan on two days to get everything done without pulling your hair out.

I'd call my insurance company and ask them. There are several companies on the net that will give you prices. Try that. I wouldn't think it would be over $200.00 for a month. They'll want to know where the truck is going etc. I believe that you'll need a DOT number at least, not sure because I always had one.
Good Luck
