I've got a pecan tree that I grew from a nut, (true story).
Anyway, I look around at the pecan orchards and I notice that they don't have any low branches. Mine is about 5 ft tall, but the lowest branch is about 1 ft off the ground. Do you think I should trim them?
    I'd appreciate any experienced advice.
    Thanks

yes, you want the tree to "breathe"......

my late dad taught me that, to never have "ANY" tree's branches touch or get that far down to the ground

If you needed advice on how to cut a tree down... Or what wood to use for firewood in the PNW then I could probably help. But this is way out of my wheel house. LOL

Wait until early spring to prune if possible.
It’s best to prune when the tree is dormant, instead of actively growing.
And, when you do prune, never ever damage the branch whorl…that’s the collar at the main stem that looks like a wrinkly ring around the branch. That’s the part that covers the wounds and protects the tree.

Ok. Was going to wait until this winter. Like I said, I grew it from a nut......the squirrels bury nuts all over the place and I went to pull out what I thought was a weed, and it turned out to be a tree growing out of a pecan nut. I'm about 5 years in, so I'm guessing that whoever buys this place after I croak will have a pretty nice tree.

I know pecan farmers do a lot of pruning and shaping as the trees grows to optimize nut production and health - think bonzai but with a monetary payoff.

I also know up here we need to trim back the lower branches so they don't hog nutrients and leave the top of the tree too weak for the snow.

So A plus B makes me think, yeah you need to do some pruning. Me I would bring a tree guy out to have a lookie loo and give specific advice based on that tree.

Yes, the tree came from a nut.

Just be sure the advice you later use doesn't (also) come from a nut....:p :D

Actually, I was thinking about chatting up some of these farmers. Down in South GA we have a crapload of pecan farms.
Here's my tree....forgot to post it
